so whats essential that needs doing and what doesnt ? a badly serviced car costs more to run a service is not just change oil and filter its a check of the cars roadworthyness aswel or is that not worth checking

ive read some of your posts nobspanners and you say ive got no useful info

I agree, the value in the service of an older car is as much in what is inspected and deemed satisfactory (or otherwise) as in what is replaced.

My car is 13 years old with 213k miles up. Last year I did 21,700 miles. It is regularly serviced by my local independent garage and is very reliable.

Hmm...so that's how you get a cheap service!

Service showed both front tyres worn ( I guessed these would need replacing), brake fluid dirty and needing to be flushed, brake pads and discs 75% worn, alternator belt cracked and needing to be replaced and some other bits I forget.
    Total bill about £400.
Moral of this story: I'm going to crack open the Haynes and learn to do more basic maintenance myself and keep the servicing up to date.
Thanks for all your help and advice.:T

It is so hard to judge if that £400 is dear or not... some services will be that high if alot needs doing, including tyres. Unless you listed every item, I couldn't say. I would need to go off and price it myself! Tyres, well, you can get budget, but I would rather have mid range up for my car, that is a personal decision.

Haynes? I'd rather get a man in... ;)

You seem to have misunderstood what people are generally saying. Spending less on a car doesn't necessarily means less servicing. This is a 10 years old car, we are talking about economy service - to value of car. The car is worth approx £800 and spending a lot on servicing is not always a good idea as it doesn't add any value to the car like a newish car. Also most people who own a quite old car (like OP and me) may want to change to a newer car soon, in a year or two. So, in many ways it would be a waste of money to spend a lot on servicing other than the essentials - oil and oil filter. OP if you do want a full service then it should cost u no more than £150 from a garage.

Many people here are a lot more knowledgeable regarding motoring than u think.

Unfortunately not yourself. Spending on servicing is always a good idea, particularly once it gets old. It will need more care and attention.

Oh you can change the car for something newer if you like, but don't do that on the assumption that you'll be saving money - you won't.

Better the devil you know. If you've had a car 10 years and it needs £1000 of work, that £1000 might just last you another 5 years. How much would the newer car have depreciated by in that time? A lot more, that's how much.

This is one of my bugbears about servicing, when you actually read what is included there is quite often just a lot of checking, nothing is actually fixed or replaced. So effectively you're paying for the garage to find work for them to do on the car.

For the tyres, brakes and brake fluid, you could of gone in to any of the Nationals and they'd have told you that for free and then you'd have just paid them for the work. I'd be interested to know what actual parts you got fitted in your original £250, otherwise that's 3 hours (£83 phr) of labour looking over a fiesta. I'm not sure what I'd find to do for that length of time on a fiesta.
  • Even if it is an import - it shouldn't make it more expensive.

We get loads in... check it out.

    What make is it??

    It's a Honda Integra Type R 2003 (DC5).
I would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!
