Is £250 a rip off for major service?
Hello, I hope you can help..
I need to service my 1998 fiesta as I have owned it for 18 months and not done so yet.
Local garage where I have MOT done (cheaply) quoted £280:eek:
Ford dealer/servicing quoted £250.
Work colleagues are divided between 'Oooh i get MOT and service for £60' and 'You should see how much my old banger costs'
Upshot is I am mightily confused. I want a major service as have really worked the car this summer, rather than just an oil change. I don't have skills to dig out the Haynes myself either! Advice would be gratefully received.
Miss B

£60 may just about cover MOT & an oil change, and that is if you do the oil change yourself!0

Suppose if you work it out, if you havent bothered doing any other servicing for 18 months, a £250 service is really only about 14 quid a month.
Depends what you need done to your car, if it hasnt seen a garage for that length of time, maybe you've done 50k in it then £250 aint too bad, lucky it's rstill going, if on the other hand, you have only done 3k, then £250 may be a bit dear. Really if you post up how many miles you have done since last service, how it's driven, i.e if urban driving or motorway driving, what was done for last MOT and when that was, perhaps it would be easier for us to guess if that is a dear quote.0 -
Full service - and car is overdue.. £250 isn't bad..
Do you not have a Ford independent garage near you? Just out of interest, how much mileage have you put on the car in the last 18 months - may give us a rough idea as to whether the £250 is high or not.
Don't forget it may need some other bits as well as the service parts - ie brake pads, w/blades, bulbs maybe..Genie

I got my full service done for £140 all in on my Focus at my local indie!"He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,
He will kill your cat and nail him to the door"

A 10 year old car. Oil and filter would be about my limit. If I was feeling flush I might strerch to plugs and air filter if required. Might give the brakes a once over just to be safe.
The rest would be done as when they gave up the ghost.0 -

Not sure that that is necessarily money saving - or safe. Why just the brakes? Other parts need to be checked too.Genie

what would be done at a full service compared to just a normal service?
i remember when my focus was due its first service,140 quid, the next service was a full service, they wanted 250 quid,i asked to see the service sheet to compare what would cost an extra 110, i found it was only changing the spark plugs that differed.
as hintza has said on a 10 year old car spin the filters and check the brakes and all the fluid levels ok and all lights are operartional and tyres are legal. thats a service, dont let them fool you into thinking its any more.
parts and labour for all above would not be any more than 100 - 150....work permit granted!0 -
