    Thanks,
I could see the memory and hard drive difference - but it was the difference in the build quality of the brands (I have only had Dells and Toshibas) and the processors I wasn't sure about. Was not sure if the difference was worth £37.
    Cheers
I don't think there's much difference quality wise between Lenovo and Compaq, though I can't say I've had much experience with either.

    Hi All,

I am a total newbie when it comes to technical things. I'm looking for a laptop for no more than £350 for DD.

    Use would be:

    Surfing internet
    School Uni Work
    I Pod Thingamy Stuff
Playing some games (SIMS) - but can live without if necessary
    Webcam

I'd welcome some good guidance / recommendations.

I need to buy in the next 3-4 weeks.

    Thanks for your assistance.

    Ceebs x
  • hi, i'm going to be a student next year so i need i laptop (ive never owned one before). i was thinking of getting a macbook, but even with student discounts, the cheapest you can get it for is around £750-£800. so therefore i am asking for your guys advice:

Budget: up to £450, ideally £400 though
Use: i like playing memory sapping games like football manager and sims, so a good memory and speed would be nice. it would also of course be used for surfing the internet and work.

also, having seen some earlier posts, i saw the compaq, asus and advent ones on ebuyer, and they look pretty good, but as a complete noob when it comes to buying laptops, could someone explain whats the differences between a notebook and a laptop?

    thanks for replies guys!!

I was going to ask for advice as well on laptops, but after that response to Money Makes I think I'll try elsewhere - thought this was supposed to be a helpful thread

It is but, whilst I think Snooze was a little harsh, if you ask a question, are told the answer, then ask the exact same question again I wouldn't expect much other than being pointed towards the answer that's already been supplied for you once.

It is a helpful thread but people do need to read thru the previous posts, and for really techie stuff go to one of the more specialist forums available via simple google searches.

That said, and to save one group of users from going back thru the 27 pages of posts , IMHO anyone into serious gaming is not realistically going to find a suitable laptop at under £400. Even more so if they expect to use it for course work and downloads as well!
