I've been looking for a laptop for my kid sister and mum to use in the house and I've found this one which seems a decent spec and I think you'll find the deal below hard to beat when you take the offer + the cashback all into account.
Spec:
Acer Travelmate 5720-101G12Mi - LX.TK20X.120
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 (1.8 Ghz, FSB 800Mhz, L2 Cache 2MB)
RAM: 1GB (4GB Max)
Hard Drive: 120GB SATA
Optical Drive: DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM writer/re-writer
Display: Widescreen 15.4" TFT (Resolution WXGA 1280 x 800)
Graphics: Intel X3100, shared up to 252MB
Included Software: Vista Home Premium, MS Office 60-day trial
Warranty: 1 year return to depot.
The Price at Misco is £314.99 but they have a £50 cashback deal on at the moment until 16/09/08 so that brings the price down to £264.99
P&P is £5.86 inc VAT so that makes it £270.85
+ If you go via Quidco you can get £7.50 for an Acer laptop + 4% (ex VAT+P&P) so thats an extra £18.22 off
So the total works out somthing like this
+ Laptop £314.99 (£268.08+VAT)
+ P&P £5.86 (£4.99+VAT)
= Total To Pay Misco = £320.86 (£273.07+VAT)
- £50 Misco Cashback (order by 16/09/08, claim by 30/09/08)
- £7.50 Quidco Acer Laptop at Misco Cashback
- £10.72 Quidco Misco Cashback (@ 4% of £268.08)
= Total Cashback due = £68.22
Total Cost = £252.64 :money:

Hello!
I just brought my mum this one from currys:

It is refurbished but dont let that scare you! My mums works perfectly and looks brand new! She only uses her laptop to email and write letters so for her its brilliant! I good amount of speed with a new amount of memory.
And if you have a look in the discount code forum there might even be a code to get a bit more money off! Free delivery on items over £150 at currys as well. We ordered ours on thursday 4th and it was delivered on tuesday 9th so the delivery was a decent speed!
Hope that helps someone!I'm getting married in August 2015:j0 -
I know very little about computers, but saw this recommended in the Daily Telegraph tech section. I'll copy their brief review below - would greatly appreciate any comments from people with nouse!
Cheers,

Best buy: Acer Aspire 5920
Last Updated: 12:01am BST 21/08/2008
Price: £399
From: pcworld.co.uk
An exceptionally good price for a very decent laptop computer.
The 3GB of memory is the standout feature, and will ensure that the machine can handle multiple tasks, such as picture or movie editing and music listening on top of web surfing and word processing, as well as cope with the extra demand the Windows Vista operating system places on resources.
The Acer has got a 160GB hard drive, 15in screen, Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a built in webcam and Wi-Fi.
At 3kg, it's not the most lightweight laptop on the market, but the Aspire 5920 is a real workhorse of a machine, and its beefy memory power more than makes up for any of its other shortcomings.
A solid, sensible investment.0 -
I would seriously advise against buying an Acer laptop at any price, they are called 'TravelMate' for a reason, they usually spend most of their lives traveling between service center and end user!
Acer have one of the worst records for relailablility and their customer service isn't very good either. For just a few quid more get a Toshib, HP or Fujitsu machine and you have a much greater chance of enjoying your laptop for longer.
I speak with considerable experiance, working for an independent IT company we have had many Acer issues over the years, much more than any other manufacturer. Acer are cheaper for a reason!0 -
does anyone know what type of laptop i would need to keep all my music on so i can play it at my club over big speakers ?0

Re Acer, I am sorry you have not had much luck.....personally I love mine and have never had any trouble, nor has a friend of mine....I would be curious to know if you were unlucky or if the malaise is widespread.
Secondly I too need to buy a pc for a student.....but wonder if she really needs a laptop; why not get a desktop which would offer far more bang per buck as well as being less easy to forget/misplace / have stolen? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
