Thanks for the links! I bit the bullet yesterday and went for a Dell laptop linked previous (by you, millionaire, in fact, the inspiron 1564) as the offer (I thought) ended yesterday, could still cancel as I imagine they have a money back guarantee...
I'm not too fussed about windows, but it won't do any harm I guess, especially for office documents (not a fan of openoffice, and have a copy of word somewhere..) It has a faster, newer processor, DDR3 ram (don't think this makes a massive difference though).. Hard drive size not crucial.. Any ideas on the ebuyer laptop build quality and screen quality? They're the hardest things to assess online. I don't mind spending the extra £100, as I don't replace laptops often (the one I have now is 6 years old!) if it's worth it...
Cheers!
I can't vouch for the quality on the Ebuyer ones, having not personally got my hands on one, however if you check the links there is a number of buyer reviews on it.
I do have a Dell 1545 which is a nice laptop.
If you still want to cancel the Dell, I think you can cancel the order as long as they haven't started to build the system, you can check this via the order tracking link they should have sent you. You will have to ring them to cancel.0 -
Hi, is this machine any good for the price and specs??

I have Windows 7 & Vista and quite frankly, now Vista has settled down and updates applied, it seems to be fine. Windows 7 has a few quirks and one I do not like in particular, is the amount of screen taken up on a laptop by toolbars etc. OK on a 22" desktop but a 15.4" laptop, well I have reduced mine to the minimum but still reckon 20% of the screen area is taken up with this stuff.
Not sure what tool bars you are talking about. Perhaps you have some junk programs installed?
Definately some deals to be had at the moment -Toshiba Satellite L350D-216 £4000 -

Best laptop/ netbook under £300?
I have an Acer Aspire One (not sure how much they are in the UK but would assume under 300).
It's a fantastic little machine, I've tried Windows 7 on it and it's grand, but where the real action is is when you put Linux on as your OS.
I use Crunchbang as my main OS and use Virtualbox for Windows XP (solely for my Zune HD and non-WINE compatible applications). I also run VM's of Wolvix, Ubuntu and Slackware.
Getting back OT, I'd go for an Aspire One, and if you can, add an extra 1gb of RAM to it (though you may need some technical experience for this as it requires taking the machine apart to get to the discreetly hidden SODIMM slot on the board). If you can handle getting away from Windows but would like the most 'similar-to' experience, put Ubuntu or Mint on it.0 -
I'm looking for a laptop as close to £300 as possible. I am looking for it to have a 15" screen or so (so not a small netbook or anything.)
I've come up with the Toshiba Satelitte L450D-13X for £329.
pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/toshiba-satellite-l450d-13x-04127252-pdt.html (put the www back in.)
Can anyone confirm if this is a good deal, or if I'm missing any better offers please?
Computer specs aren't my strong suit, and I've been searching for weeks to come up with something, and have missed a couple due to taking too long to make my mind up!
I'd really appreciate someone reassuring me, or coming up with something else for around that money! Thank you very much in advance!0 -

Scan back through the last couple of pages, that's not a good spec (look for a dual core processor) and there have been better suggestions
Thank you, but I have, I've been following the thread with close interest. A few have been posted that looked great, but when I went to buy them were discontinued. Others were closer to the £400 than the £300, so were out of my price range. Others had linux on, or not windows, and the person using it will need windows.
Unless I missed any specific one, I couldn't see any that fit?
I've now found the Advent Roma 1001 at £339. It's stretching my price range a lot, but seems to be pretty good and won some awards as best all rounder. I also had a personal recommendation it was a good laptop. But now you've said look for duel core processor - and it doesn't seem to have one! Am I back to the drawing board?

There were some good ones at the Argos eBay shop - but I really need to be able to collect the item, and not send it through the post - as it is a gift for the person I live with.0 -
I have just ordered the Toshiba L450D 13G from Currys for £408

Ideally you want a Dual Core processor, From experience the single core processors are not that good and can be a chore to use.
I was going to recommend this one
