Most of the laptops at this £400 price range are good all rounders and have a similar specification. Therefore, it really comes down to which brand you prefer. For example, Tesco have the almost identical specified Toshiba C650-15Z for the same price of £399.

It is generally regarded that Toshiba is one of the most reliable brands available, along with Asus. If it was me, I'd plump for the Toshiba simply because of the prospect that it would be more reliable. Also, if you want to extend Toshiba's warranty to two years, it's £25 direct from the Toshiba UK website or possibly a bit cheaper from Amazon.

    Hi

I've also been looking for a decent bargain laptop, probably a Toshiba.

Does anyone happen to know the meaning of the numbers and letters for the models of Toshiba? Do they denote a level of spec or are they more random? There's just so many!

Is it easy when you know how or does it require a phd?

It would be really a helpful shortcut to just tell by the name how the Satellite Pro C65D-10Z differs from, say, the Satellite C650-15C, and if it is a better PC etc.

Obviously, I would definitely double-check the spec in detail before buying, but this would help to know where to start and save a bit of time!

Any help would be appreciated! :)

You can compare side by side the various specs of Toshiba's laptops on their website. Obviously they don't show every possible configuration but certainly enough to give you an idea of the different specs.

For example this page shows all the "Satellite" models and summarises the main differences between them. You can then narrow your selection by clicking the box and clicking "view all models" brings up only those in that series eg the C650

All it takes is a bit of time and patience to keep filtering until you find the model/spec that you want.
  • Some great deals here :)
    Zzzz :j
  • Wondered if anyone here could advise me:o. I'm looking to buy a reasonably cheap (I'm thinking under £300, but as cheap as possible) laptop as a present. All it will be used for is light internet use and Zylom games, but will need a CD drive. Preferably a reasonably good processor due to very slow computers previously.
I've read a lot of this thread and researched on the internet, but I dont really know what I'm looking for. I'm not even sure if a laptop is needed or is a notebook would suffice?
Any advise would be very gratefully recieved!

Any thoughts on the Acer Aspire 5551A from Argos at £349?

Don't bother - mine has not arrived. Argos say DHL have lost it but did not respond until I opened a dispute.

Still not refunded, have the item in stock still but won't send me another one. Just waiting for the 10 days to expire so I can get my money back and buy something else.

You should be looking on the Argos Ebay Clearance site as it often has some real bargains but mostly in refurbished laptops.

Would you consider refurbished (with a warranty of course) or maybe a slightly older generation laptop? As an example I found this Dell Latitude D630. It got plenty of very good reviews.

Thanks for those links Knarf, just the kind of things I was after! Should have thought of the Toshiba site. There's a lot to trawl through, but I'll have a go. I'll try not to get too bogged down in too many detail though.. I'm still a novice at specs and it's quite a learning curve! :)
