A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

    Firstly, congratulations on the news!

I would recommend you find a venue which is relaxed and in "your" control. I've been Best Man twice and our own wedding used a Rugby Club, with external caterers etc. If your OH's Best Man can take on running the post-wedding ceremony items simply by MC-ing etc then you can cut the costs significantly over that for a hotel, plus, you'll have a much more relaxed and personal event. You can save a lot over the "big venue" costs whilst not in any way detracting from the focus of the day which is simply you and OH.

Do enjoy the planning as well as the day itself, and I look forward to hearing of your plans.

It was actually in the helicoptor ride that he booked! Over the statue of liberty and I had to lip read cause it was so noisy :grinheart Am really happy but am getting the p*** taken out of me because when he said I could go anywhere to eat - never mind the expense - I chose Dunkin' Donuts :rotfl:

Getting married at the tender age of ten must of been hard SMF2

Thanks Stuart, I'm hoping you'll be my guide to reality if I turn into bridezilla and start demanding solid gold shoes and the like ;)

I've been banned from organising the wedding till after christmas by OH but we are thinking about things generally (specifically on some things too)

:o If nobody minds I'll keep the wedding updated generally here too, as well as using the wedding board, as I don't want to stop saving my £32.88 a month to OPaying in January.

P.S. Not allowed to ask for money towards the windows or mortgage as wedding gifts - I have agreed totally to this after hearing OH's reasoning

  • CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! :j  :j

my word!!!!you know what, i was thinking about 5 mins ago i haven't been on here for a while and was drawn over....and now i know why!!!!!! I'm so chuffed for you!!!! we got engaged in NY too!!! Ooooooo, lovely!!!!!!

we got married for £6000, included ceremony (registrar), surprise horse and cart (parents), hire of a boat that seated 70 to take guests to reception, the reception, 3 course meal for 70, and evening do, and honeymoon suite. it also included dress buying for me and the numerous bridemaids (although 3 out of the 6 chipped in for their own dresses - hey, was cheaper than them not being a bridemaid and having to buy an outfit!!!), and suit hire for all the men (7 i think in the end). even if i'dve had more money, i honestly honestly can say i would not have changed anything about our wedding day, it was just beautiful....oooooooooooooooooooooooooo i'm sooooo bloody excited for you!!!!!

MSEtips: ok, get a family / friend to make cake - we had loads of chocolate rice crispy cakes, chocolate cornflake cakes and choc muffs all tiered up - gift from aunt. Friend did DJing and brought his own equipment- gift. Couple of friends gave us money when we announced our engagement so that went on the boat hire. Two dear friends did photos - gift.

crikey, i'm all out already! oh yeah - the flowers. Cheap as chips, but stunning at the same time. We managed to find a florist who was 'new' to the area from london and wanted to build up his portfolio - he was amazing! one bridal bouquet, 5 bridemaids bouquets, 2 flowers fo hair, 14 buttonholes, 9 single stem flowers for table decorations: £160. we just used one flower and that was it, lots of greenery etc. Gorgeous.

Apologies, i'm on overdrive!!! I'm helping my friend plan her wedding at the mo!!!!! pm me anytime if you need any help - methinks i best stop now before i take over!!!!

    sincerely though, many many congrats!!!!:T

we used one type of flower! lol, not literally one flower for everyone....lol

  • Congratulations!! What a wonderful way for him to propose too - fantastic and what a story to tell in the future too!

Word of advice re the wedding itself. If you do everything else on a budget, please don't be tempted to go "cheap" on the photos. Your dress, your shoes, the cars, the reception and DJ are all just for one day, the photos are what you will look back on, and sit with your children and grandchildren and talk about - it's well worth paying a fair price for a good photographer. I'd seriously advise against the "get friends to do it" thing too - think about it this way, things go disastrously wrong and you end up with NO pictures of your big day - how long will those friendships last? Weddings - and particularly wedding dresses, require a good level of skill to photograph, and a good wedding photographer with years of practical experience is worth his weight in gold.

MissusF, thank so much for the offer of help. I keep thinking of lots of little things that I need to know so you'll see me a lot on the Weddings page coming up with one off questions.

I've already told my cake bakers what I want! :rotfl:
we used one type of flower! lol, not literally one flower for everyone....lol

I really like that idea and think I want the same  how do calla/arium lillies sound? :D

You sound just like my OH EssexH :) I did suggest that we use a friend of ours to do the photo's but he wants a professional for the reasons you said and someone he doesn't know so he can shout at them if the photo's aren't perfect

I'm off to try and catch up with everyone's threads since I've not 'seen' anyone for ages
