Hey, i work in a contact centre for yorkshire bank and i understand what you mean by the sales pitch. Its drummed into us every day that we need to ask every eligible customer if they would be interested in a loan/mortgage/insurance! I hate doing it, but its part of the job. I have to say though, that you can request a note on your details stating that under no circumstance have you to be asked. You just have to tell them and the advisor should then add a high priority message to your account.
Obviously this could be a tad difficult with the indian call centres, but you might as well try it. :wall:
This does apply to all banks by the way!

I absolutely refuse to deal with these overseas call centres now. I have cancelled a number of accounts as soon as I discover they use them. Their English is often appalling, they have little grasp of what is required, and it is just impossible to get anything done. It is shameful that companies are willing to cut costs without considering the implications of lousy service, which is why I dump them.
What really annoys though is being cold-called by these people. One rang me the other morning, for about the 4th time, trying to sell me a mobile phone. I have been relatively polite previously, just asking them constantly to repeat everything as their English is so poor, until they give up. But the last time they woke me up, and I let the poor sap have both barrels. I trust they will not bother me again.0 -
i too have shared the frustrations you've all described. it's a false economy in the end, isnt it? we get frustrated, have our time wasted and they get verbal abuse and work antisocial hours to correspond with out time zones.
Can we compile a definitive list of those banks (utilities, services etc. too?) that do use overseas call centres?
PS long live the MSE!0 -

https://www.saynotooverseascallcentres.com (a call centre location directory sort of thing). As previously posted by "Janner"
What a useful website - i think the idea is consumers add their own experiences IE call centres are UK or India Based - what a good idea!!0 -
I share your frustrations - had the same problem when I just wanted to know what time my HSBC shut on the weekend-was routed through to India, just to tell me the closing hours!
BUT, its not right to be venting our frustrations at the staff-its the UK based companies that have chosen to ship their entire operations out to India to save $$$.
The Japanese did it when they moved their car making/electronics here in the 1980s...and then pulled out when it was cheaper t move lesewhere.
I am sure our complanies will find India too expensive one day, and ship it tall to Kazakistan!0 -

I refuse to speak to them now as I find it very fustrating and ultimately upsetting when I am constantly misunderstood. I now retry until I get Ireland. Bit extreme maybe, but I can't take the risk of another miserable converstation with someone who blatantly can't understand what I'm talking about.
Totally agree with im with AOL also and have had so much problems and i just get so frustrated and usually end up managing to sort out the prob myself.0 -
Wonderful thread!
Agree with poster about Sky - although I used to press the button for sales/upgrade, alway got thru' to the UK. I wonder why!
Not had to call them recently but some of my banking is with the Halifax.
If you go on there website they have a 'call me back' thingy.
I spoke to someone in Ireland, very helpful and very friendly.0
