  • Ok... so I'm a 'silver saver'.

    So what?

After spending some time lurking on this forum and checking things out generally, the most I've managed to establish that being in the 50-60 age range gets you is MAYBE a bit off your car insurance.

I'd love to be told differently, so come on guys... let this unobservant person in on all these fabulous concessions and reductions that magically come with the big 50.

I'm not totally convinced that it would be a good idea to hold my breath...

Apparently you can go on Saga holidays  .

I agree, I am nearly 55  and still looking for any benefits.

Once upon a time you could send for a free basic hearing aid (amplifier) at 50, then they made it 55, and I bet you can't get one at all now until you're about 99 :(.

Oh well, at least we are still alive :D .
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • Here's a very useful website for saving money - I love the grocery vouchers!

I would be interested to hear if anyone else else has used it?

Well...if you really are a "silver saver" what about this "silver saver account" at Northern Rock. Instant access, min deposit £1. Pays interest monthly or annually, no penalties for withdrawals, operates as internet account...have to be over 50 to be eligible!

AER : 5.70% (ie 5.70% if annual payment and 5.70% - with interest compounded - if interest paid monthly)

I remember a few years ago in Florida I went into a fast food place for breakfast.I ordered a breakfast special and coffee. The price above the counter said $3.99 for the breakfast special and 75c for the coffee and I ordered that. The young guy on the counter was about 16. Anyway he put the stuff on the tray, said some price and I gave him a ten dollar bill and got my change, walked to a seat with my tray and sat down. I looked at the receipt he'd given and it seemed he'd made a mistake.I looked again.
It should have cost $4.74 plus tax but the receipt said Seniors breakfast $1.99 and Seniors coffee 25c plus tax.
I was 45 at the time.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. :o

When I was 42 I went into the post office. A woman was doing a promotion. She introduced herself and asked if I would like info on benefits and help available to over 50s for getting back to work. This haappened about a month after I had been promoted to a management position.

I went straight across the road and made a hair appointment!

My DD might make the odd post for me

to  - and the local shops are shut, so you just HAVE to go to CostCo and get a catering size one! :rotfl:
And silly me, I didn't ask the jewellers if they gave a discount

There's no better place than CostCo for a birthday cake! I love their white cakes with white icing, reminds me of birthdays in Florida when I was a kid.

I can't think of anything specific you suddenly get at 50 that doesn't apply to either 45 or 55. Except a few more wrinkles.

Can you be more specific - do you mean benefits or what?

It's an odd sort of a question, isn't it?

What would she like to get?

What does she think she should get?

    'Get' - from where?

    I can't remember anything different that I got when I was 50.
