Until the bank refuse topay we don't know if there is a problem.
I agree that £900 for a 2nd hand laptop is stooopid. It must be really special. I've just spent £600 ona Sony Vaio and thought that was expensive.

True. He could have been so excited at bagging such a bargain that he made a genuine mistake with the date.
The cheque needs to be paid in to the bank. If it bounces for whatever reason, you will get it back anyway - then you can take it from there.

On Friday I did something very stupid - I changed the 7 to an 8 and tried to pay it in.
I went to the bank where the cheque was drawn and the cashier refused to give me any details about the account holder but confirmed the account had been closed some time ago - ie more then 6 months ago
Thank is all the information he was prepared to give0 -
you'll have to go back to the police, i think they can get that info from the bank.
the only thing is the cheque book etc could be stolen.
have you looked this person up on 192 electorial roll?0 -

Would changing the 7 to an 8 on the cheque make the OP guilty of deception now?
Why on earth did you do that Chloe and not follow previous advice to just present it to your bank?0 -
By presenting with or without the date amended the bank's system would have come up with the same reason for declining payment.
OP has been scammed and the only option now is the police.0 -
But why amend a cheque which is out of date (Jan 2007) to something which is still out of date ..... Jan 2008 !!
And then draw attention to it by asking about the account. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
