Mine is a NatWest Servicecard 100 which is a maestro / guarantee card and my account number is definitely nowhere within the 16 digit number on the front.
It used to be in the last 9 digits but Natwest changed this some time ago. It probably differs from Bank to Bank and so you can't always check.

Just checked my Natwest card, same as yours.
Hsbc as I said before.
So with some banks you cannot check 100% (Natwest at least)This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
Always worth taking a picture and getting details of the tranport being used when doing transactions with strangers even if for cash.0

Some banks also issue credit cards which can double up as cheque guarantee cards for any current account you hold with any branch of the same bank. Eg some Barclaycard and Co-Op bank credit cards have this facility.0 -

So on these accounts it's not possible for the person receiving the cheque to accertain whether the cheque and card refer to the same account? This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -

Thats correct, but with this type of card they aren't specific to any one current account. Not many banks issue cheque guarantee cards in this way, but Barclays and Co-op are two (perhaps the only two) of the few banks that do this.0 -

Agreed but the OP's problem involves what may be a cheque on a closed account supported by a card which may have applied to a different account. The question was how to check.
However someone has already pointed out that the cheque was outside the scope of a guarantee card (£900) so we're probably talking to ourselves now. But it's useful to know the limitations of the systems used by various banks. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
Pay it in. Banks may and do honour old cheques. Sometimes they don't even notice.
A cheque is only a mandate - you may be lucky and this is an open account & he will have thought the cheque has 'expired'. If he stops or disputes the cheque you will have a running chance of finding (through the bank) enough of his details to sue him.0
