At the very bottom of the page is "Your Travel Preferences" field

Shows Meal Status and Seat Status

In this field there is a "Select of Modify" button with and arrow(bottom right hand side)

    Click that button

Takes you to another page with "Indicate Your preferences"

There should be a "seating preference" field with a link to "Make your selection"

Mine doesn't show this, and didn't prior to me starting my trip. I have a friend sorting my AF seat for me. ;)

    LHR - LAX

    Outbound via AMS with KLM
    Return direct with AF

No problems in getting an exit row seat on the outbound flight (selected online), even though it was full. I had the window seat, which I don't usually like, but it is well worth it on this route for some absolutely breathtaking views.

Three people did get upgraded on the flight, as they gave up their seats so that a family could sit together. I was not eligible as I was on the exit row (I didn't ask/ offer) - my bad! However, I have a feeling that the three were also elite cardholders, as I am pretty sure that they had priority boarding.

The flight with KLM - an excellent crew, very friendly and very helpful. There was no seatback IFE, which for an eleven hour flight is pretty horrendous (thankfully I had my laptop with me, however the guy next to me spent the whole journey just staring into space, and sleeping on me  ). The food was awful, even at airline standards.

Would I fly with KLM again? No. I doubt that all crews are as friendly as this one, and they were the only positive on the journey.

Would I come to LA again? Yes yes!

I'll update after my return journey! x

dmg, now I know you are addicted here but this is ridiculous, step away from the PC, get out and enjoy your stay. BTW you say the KLM are pants, but are they as good as Ryanair?;)
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

It's wierd air france and KLM are the same company but both airlines have totally different standards.. Me and my family went to shanghai last year flew out with AF I left early and came back with AF and both flights were great! My family flew back with KLM and they said the service was terrible, the plane old and food awful.

Habit of travelling alone, I have to get online for at least an hour a day (plus the shops aren't open yet, what is a girl to do?!). My plan for the day centres around the Macy's One Day Sale ... and a new Samsonite case!

Talking of travelling alone, I cannot remember a trip where I have met so many pleasant and interesting people. Definitely friendlier than NY.

KLM or Ryanair? Difficult to compare. Short haul, for value and convenience, I would still go for Ryanair. Medium haul, I would honestly say there is little between them. Long haul, I would not pay more than £150 for either!

IMHO, any difference between the two of them with regard to standards is minimal and equates to their service varying only between very poor and very, very poor. :)

  • Glasgow - Nyc via Ams 14 October

5 nights at Pan American Hotel .... booked direct with hotel .

Would have saved £10 odds if booked through a site but no payment required from hotel direct until arrival. So if in the event that the flights were cancelled then I wouldnt lose anything on the hotel.

Thanks for that tip- I have reserved a room for us in May. Ironically i found it much cheaper $1064 for 4 of us direct on website- whereas £1185 in GBP through expedia.co.uk
