    Hello Brighton peoples!
I don't know if anyone's said this already but my fave moneysaving tip for when things are really tight (ie: the end of the month!) is to go round the supermarkets when they start reducing things.
The best times to go are around 7 at Somerfield London Road, 6 and 9.45 at Co-op Baker street (nr. London Road).
Sad I know but very cheap! Does anyone else do this or is it just me?

Although I don't go out of my way to go shopping late.

    The discounts can be hit & miss, 25%, 50% & 75%.

I just go shopping for what I need, when I need to, then if I'm lucky they'll have some discounted items I fancy.

    Sometimes I strike jackpot !

If they don't have discounted items there's always next week, next month.

I love using the Co-Op on Portland road for deals, seems the veggie man has increased his prices...

His bananas are still a very good deal, (got a big bowl today for £1, and I've had loads of free tomoaotes off him recently: if you buy over a certain amount he chucks stuff in for free still. I agree though, some of his prices aren't all that.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

Hi all, I was recommended to post here by Brighton belle :)

DH and I are spending 4 nights in Brighton in August (28th August to 2nd September) for our first wedding anniversary, as we got married there.

I booked and paid for the hotel, together with the hire car. Money is tight but I will have put enough away to pay for parking and petrol by the time we go, both of which are a huge chunk.

DH's role was to put money away for food/outings but he's not great when it comes to finances so our spending money is looking pretty grim and I'm a little peeved with him, should have kept a closer eye really

So if I am going to estimate on the cautious side, our total spending money for 4 nights is going to be something like £160! Looks like a romantic meal is off the menu then :o

I have found some museums and art galleries in Brighton we could go to which are free. There is also a gothic church (we love gothic architecture) which is free to go and look at, although it wouldn't take long. There is also a "undercliff walk" from the Marina to Saltdean which sounds cool. We would also like to go to Arundel Castle which would be £30 for the two of us but it would be a whole day thing so that's not too bad and we could take a packed lunch from M&S or somewhere.

I guess it's not the price of the attractions that is worrying me but food! Breakfast is included in our hotel so it's just lunch and dinner.

I have some luncheon vouchers we can use, and I will keep looking on the MSE page for offers as a lot of the restaurants with deals can be found in Brighton.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to try and keep costs down and yet have a bit of fun?!

    Thanks :)

China China is good for food. in the road off western road with all the restaurants in. Edit: Preston Street

Lots of chinese students etc go there, lovely food, and used to be able to eat a 2 course meal with a soft drink for twenty quid (for both of you - not each) - haven't been there for a couple of years though :o

Nice idea and you will have a lovely time...

How about a day trip to Lewes? Not far on the train, also have a lovely castle (closer than Arundel), and such quaint little cobbled streets...

China China seconded here - very yummy!

Also the Indian 'all you can eat' on Ship Street in centre of town is good, vegetarian but I have always found it nice and certainly better than many.

You could stock up on snacks at the £1 store (practically opposite the Indian all you can eat).

You could print buy 1 get 1 free meal vouchers for somewhere like Strada or Haha, or Pizza Express around teh time you come down.

For cheap dinner, buy lovely M&S salads for a romantic meal on Brighton beach and see lovely sunset...

I like the homemade food place opposite the big Boots ear clock tower, can't remember the name, but they cook fresh (ironic location for fresh healthy food, next to Burger King!) as they also do all you can eat type meals and the selection is moreish looking in the window...

The museums often have free exhibitions, sometimes there are street entertainers on East Street.

You can lounge in the Pavillion gardens area, with a view of the Pavillion, enjoying the Brighton atmosphere for nothing! Maybe splurge on a tasty ice lolly...

Take a walk up to Preston Park for lush greenery if the day is too hot to be on the beach, buy ready made kebab sticks and a £1.99 (or £1 from Poundstore) disposable BBQ.

  • Hi Everyone,

If you go to communitysavings.co.uk you can input your name and email address to get around £1500 of money saving vouchers to use across Brighton, Hove and surrounding areas.

Great deals like 2 for 1's in the local resuaurants, Sea life centre tickets, cinema discounts, free and discounted hair and beauty treatments, Clothes store deals, you can even win some great family days out and loads more.

They are released every 6 months and the current vouchers do not expire until the end of September 2009, so there is plenty of time to use them.

Once registered you just send them a stamped address envelope and they send them to you for free.

You can also get the Mid Sussex Set due out in July for similar savings.
    Hope this is useful.
  • Hi Brighton and Hove people.

Its great seeing that there's a thread here for those of use who don't have so much money in what can be quite an expensive place to live.

I agree with Eager Learner - the all-you-can-eat vegetarian Indian restaurant along Ship Street is great for a cheap meal out.

The 99p store opposite is great for bargains and I go there all the time! Some of the great 99p things I got there recently was a 4 pack of J20, a Hard Candy lip gloss bracelet and John Frieda shampoo and conditioner - all of these are much more expensive usually.

Waitrose is my nearest supermarket - its expensive - but go there around 4pm on a Sunday and there's usually a fair amount of reduced bread. It is great to get a few loaves if you've got a freezer.

    Hi Con_fused

There is loads to see & do in Brighton, EagerLearner has made some great suggestions :)

I second a day trip to Lewes rather than Arundel, much closer (awful traffic getting out to Arundel) & the town itself is lovely as is the castle.

If it's sunny & seeing as you have a car, Stanmer Park is 10 mins out of Brighton, has a lovely historic house, you can laze under trees & have a picnic & there are some lovely walks out up onto the hills as well.

Or if walks are your thing, head to the South Downs. There is a large (free!) car park at Devil's Dyke & it is utterly spectacular up there, I never tire of the views. Again, maybe 15 mins drive depending on where you're staying.

If you fancy a romantic meal one evening, try La Mangerie on Church Rd in Hove (directly opposite the huge Tescos). It's a small, informal but lovely restaurant, three very nice courses cost £21.50 and it's bring your own drinks with no corkage charge.

I don't know where your hotel is but depending on location I could suggest some roads close to town where parking is free?
Proud to be a moneysaver :)
