Its really difficult to rely just on ratio's and data to make a decision. Alot comes from experience and knowledge. I suggest reading some basic micro and macroeconomics to get a feel of the background. Then get onto some more difficult stuff when you have a stable learning base. Also set yourself a target everyday of spending 1-2 hours reading through articles in newspapers and articles online such as marketoracle.

Having a grasp of the wider situation will be more beneficial
  • Ok just breathing life into this thread again. I've got a few days off work so i am going to get to grips with using stock screeners. I've left this a while because it is my usual style to go deeply into subjects and i thought that was what i was doing with this.....but now i don't think so, people need stock screeners to help them screen through the thousands of stocks out there. Analysing and looking at fundamentals can come after you've narrowed the field down a bit....or at least that's how i'm seeing it.

    I will report back.

Thanks to tradetime for suggesting on a different thread to google stock screeners - it was helpful.

I will now go back to DL, check out the screeners there and start learning from the glossary the different terms - there's no quick way around this!:D
  • This is immediately frustrating to me though.......i'm one of those people, if i know there's a rat in the building i won't rest until it's out. I don't leave any stone unturned.....

Great for gaining expert knowledge over the long term - not so good for getting results in the short term.

Now i know i'm only learning and practicing on paper.....but i still want results...

and ok, a stock i would have shorted has taken a dive, but that was the only one i was watching and i would have made £50.

So clearly got a lot to learn.

Anyway what i'm saying is that DL gives a choice of screeners. I want to know how to use the full fundamental screener - when there are easier ones.

Why? I just think if i don't avoid the hard stuff now, it'll get easier later.....

    thoughts?
  • Ok i'm procrastinating. If i want to use the full fundamental screener - then i had better get learning the glossary of terms
