if you are VAT registered u can, but i think to be come VAT registered you have to earn £60,000 i think... or it might be if you earn upto £60,000 u can if you chose, but after that u have too

found this from HM revenue & customs Website
You must register for VAT if your annual sales are £67,000 or above and you may be able to voluntarily register if your sales are under £67,000

I really wouldn't bother registering for VAT unless you have to because of your turnover (which may include another business. Yes, you would be able to claim VAT back from the IR that you have paid out, but you would also be charging your customers the VAT (which is already calculated in their payments); so actually it is likely to mean that you have to send a cheque to the IR each quarter, and the paperwork is quite onerous. You also have to give all customers (even those buying one card at a fete) a VAT receipt with your VAT number on it etc.

I think the only time it is worth registering for VAT when you don't have to is when you run a book publishing company or similar, when the products you sell are zero rated - then you get a cheque from the Govt each quarter!

Couple of questions....can't find info about having a website link on phoenix-is it only open to ET or to everyone. I think a lot of my friends would order more this way, as they can do it in their own time etc online.-does the stuff they order get delivered to them directly or to me? Please direct me to where the website info is located.

Secondly, i tryed a door to door brouchure drop, with dismal results-not 1 single order, and several brouchure's retained. Any pointers as to which way you sell best? So far, my best orders have been from family/friends/school mums.

Thanks
Clare

hi cant answer your question on website

but door 2 door, i did this with the same results and i think its just a matter of sticking with it and finding the right clientelle. i'm deffinatly going to keep trying as i know some traders have orders from them and i'm going to more to another area still only around the corner but different kinda houses. and its good excersise :)
• Hi ClareW, I have done three door2door brochure drops. The first one I got two orders of about £23, the second time none at all and I have to go back on Friday to collect the third. (I'll let you know how I get on.)

I too have 'lost' quite a few brochures, and even if they are well wrapped in plastic bags, some do get a little soggy if it has been raining:confused: . I think I will just keep trying until I have run out of brochures, as the new brochures will be out in the New Year. The books which are left out for collection seem to be the ones no one has looked at. I guess people assume they will be expensive and can buy cheaper elsewhere, don't like to buy from doorstep sellers or don't have time to look at the brochure.

Any tips gratefully received:grin: .

Any houses that don't leave your brochure out pop a note through the door saying sorry i missed you today to collect the brochure please leave it out on............. I did this, got half back that I'd lost.Doesnt matter so much now as new brochures out soon but does when you need them!!

Just got a 3ft black christmas tree from Tesco-half price just £2!!!!:j

Have hung christmas products all over it (gift tags in packets, bottle toppers, ribbon)and sample cards of XE14 decorative tree-looks fab for displays!!
They also have 2ft silver ones for £3 I think, which are a better size for tables but black looks sooooo fab!!!!

Got some fantastic posters for my events today by email within an hour....
send details of your event to:

paula@phoenix-trading.co.uk

they put all your trader details on the bottom too.

Also put at least 2 sample cards on the top of the brochure through the door in sealed bag, then people can see teh quality straight away.
I invested 10p per sample card and did them all with Fairy Cakes & Birthday slice.
HTH 2!!!
• Thanks Egg, putting some of the samples on top of the brochure is a brilliant idea.

I have been putting one of the 'birthday circles' cards inside the brochure, which doesn't entice customers to look any further when they just see the brochure popped throught the letterbox.

Also a friend of mine did mention the fact that she didn't think the 'birthday circles' card did the products justice as a sample. I have loads of samples so I'm definately going to give your idea ago, thank you.

P.S good luck with your Christmas tree idea - hope you make lots of sales
