Wouldn't be without my Dyson - with 7 cats it's a Godsend! The kids couldn't believe it the first time I did the carpet with it - got out all the matted-in fur my old cheap vacuum didn't.

The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.
  • Another vote for Miele. We got a fab one on sale at House of Fraser recently.

Does any of the dysons/miele have a rotating head, turbo brush thingy?, i have a henry, but it can't touch my rugs :(, i'm not looking for the tiny turbo brush attachments that some hoovers give to 'lift' pet hairs. I would really appreciate any suggestions, thanks in advance :)
No one said it was gonna be easy!
  • Sebo are the dogs danglies, very expensive, but does all the things that others claim to do. Goes completly flat for getting under beds etc. and automatically adjusts for flooring type, none of this "at the touuch of a button" that Hovver rave about, just move onto the hard floor and it does it all by itself.

Never buy a Dyson they are shockingly loud

My dyson is great but heavy to carry up and down the stairs.

I have relatives who own a small hotel. They have had a Dyson and a Henry and its definitely the Henry that comes with recommendations from them. It's also the vacuum cleaner that is used by the cleaners at my sons' school which seems to suggest it will be robust and efficient. I'm waiting for my Panasonic to die so I can buy a Henry for myself.

The cylinder Dyson I use is useless. Wont pick up cats hairs on carpet with regular foot. If you put the rotating turbo brush on it does pick up hairs but you have to literally dismantle the foot afterwards to get the hairs off that wrap themselves around the cylinder. Also it is falling apart - one of the wheels comes off with alarming regularity!

  • Dyson everytime - got my DC07 Allergy 4 years ago and its been performing superbly ever since.

I really don't understand the "Dyson is falling apart / doesn't work well" stories - mine is fantastic (suction / quality) compared to the bagged hoovers I've seen. No problems with static either.

I am aware that other people report some problems with Dyson quality in terms of bits dropping off however they have grown substantially in recent years - if they were generally poor quality / unusable then that wouldn't have occured in this competitive market.

I've had a Dyson DC01/DC07 and now a DC14. Each model gets better. Despite their advertising, they do lose suction but generally only if your OH sucks up any old c**p. I have become quite the expert in disassembling it and putting it all back together to clear blockages. i can't see how any other vac would have coped with the hoovering habits of my better half.

The DC07's have a tendancy for the cyclone's to get blocked over time. Thats why they've inverted them with the DC14's and above.

The downside to Dyson's are that they do need bits replacing every so often. I've had to replace filters, even the supposed lifetime one. A bin, the bendy pipe which splits over the years with wear and tear.

The upside of course is that it sucks like nothing else, leaves your carpets cleaner and of course having a clear bin means you can feel better cos you can see the dirt you've picked up! Oh, also I've found that men (like me) don't mind using a Dyson but we have a strange aversion to other types of vaccum cleaners! :)
  • I have a miele cat and dog and not because I have any animals! Teenage daughter brushing hair became a problem on her bedroom carpet. The miele is fantastic, different power setting ie for curtains/ upholstery or thick pile carpets. It is light to carry, has a parking 'dock' at the side for the pipework and I confidently recommend it.

I did a part time cleaning job in a large house and they had an upstairs and a downstairs Dyson. They are heavy, the head is large and does not go under furniture and I wouldn't give one house space.
