Good afternoon all. Been lurking for years, and finally got the courage to commit!!! So doing the grocery and no spend challenge this month, menu plan for next week done!
However, I was given a huge turnip (with earwigs!) and thought I would make some soup as I had lots of carrots as well. However it has come out really bitter (and bitty before I strained it). Does anyone have any ideas to make it taste good? I thought perhaps as a base for stew, but I have 4 pints of the stuff (trust me, will check here for ideas first next time!).
Thank you in advance of your lovely replies

Welcome to the board. I think boiling up a few potato pieces in the soup and additions of strong flavour such as a little curry powder or garlic and herbs will help a lot. If using curry powder dont use too much but you could also add a parsnip which is sweet and a few red lentils. Simmer for 40 mins until the lentils and veg are cooked.0

I'm having a bad day and read that your turnip had earrings.... :rotfl:
Seriously, though, I hope your soup turns out ok. I haven't any better advice than curry and lentils, which I think should be great.

Ill pop this in with our soup problems thread later on
I really love turnip but can't imagine it as a soup? If i were you, i would google "turnip soup"= see what recipes come up and see what ingredients I have to match it! I can't remember what turnip tastes like to offer suggestionsEg - here's one with smoked bacon so i would fry that off and replicate the recipe as much as i was able to with my ingredients.

mmm - wouldnt have thought of turnips as a base for soup. so you have a rather bitter tasting stock. I would use this as a base stock and add some roasted veg and a few potatoes and bring to boil and simmer for about twenty mins. then blitz! you can sweeten the stock with a few spoonfuls of sugar you know - no law against it!0

Helllp!! I made an attempt at onion soup today. I took great care not to burn the onions but the soup tastes really bitter anyway. I'm supposed to be taking it to a family lunch tomorrow. Obviously I can't feed it to anyone as it is but I really hate the idea of wasting all the ingredients, electricity and gas that went into making it.
Can it be saved or is it going down the loo?Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0
