its very difficult, i feel, because sometimes people say things in a tongue in cheek kind of way, and it can read offensively.

it wouldn't happen face to face, but is very different reading it than saying it if you see what i mean.

Sarcasm doesn't come across well on paper.
Cheeky throwaway verbal comments can often be mis interpreted when written down - what would be quite amusing in conversation will often end up upsetting people when they read it. Now I try to put a ;) at the end of cheeky/sarky comments to show "I don't mean it really"

i agree lucie, i think a smily can help take the sting out of something that may be taken the wrong way.

The pen is mightier than the sword.

If everyone took the time to read through their posts (to check for spelling/grammar) prior to clicking on the Post button, it may also result in less abrupt comments on the site..............as well as easier to read postings for those who prefer to not use text.
Whilst I agree with what you say Nile ,you can do this and someone can still find fault with a post if they are inclined to ,it has happened to me :)

Ah, I see now, so the following post is okay because it has a smilie after it?

    "I agree too.

Its unfortunate that some people like to try to take over so to speak, but you do need to stand your ground and hopefully they will go away in the end"

Or is this a tongue in cheek post that really actually means what it says despite the later denial? Very welcoming to a newbie I must say.

Oh no no, the majority of us are always warm and welcoming to anybody, newies or oldies so to speak, there are always going to be people wherever you go that seem to know alot about a particular subject and as such it feels like they're pushing their views on you, but its about personal choice if you find something rude or unpleasant steer clear thats what i do know,
i was really afraid of joining in the chat in the arms at first cos everyone seemed to know each other so well and the banter was flowing, but really you only have to sit and read the posts awhile to realise, that we're all friendly and absolutely no-one bites, well except bouncy but in a pleasant friendly kind a way  ;)

also i think what is meant by the smileys etc is that because we have grown a fondness and friendship with alot of the people on here, there is a lot of banter, tongue in cheek kind of humour etc, but to put a smiley in is just like an added secruity thing so that it is understood that its just a joke or whatever. for instance if i was to reply to someone "well you are a daft mare arnt you" it could be misread, if however i was to put "well you are a daft mare arn't you ;) ;D :-*) its taken as read that its a bit of fun, does that make sense :-/ it always sounds better in your head lol.

No, it was meant as stand your ground and they will stop giving you hassle in the end, not go away as in never come back!

Welcome to the site by the way! :)

I just pop in now and then.... :)

See for instance this is the way bridie deals with it, nothing wrong with that, everybody deals with stuff differently, I on the other hand try not to let it bother me and run off back to the comfort of my friends in the arms ;) ;D :-[

So everyone else has to work out what a person is actually trying to say because its not what they type.

I can see why people feel unwelcome.
