  • Just for some reason decided to check and see if Asda deliver to me yet - and they do!!! So have done a shop with them to be delivered tomorrow as I found a code to get free delivery so will save the fuel on the 30 mile round trip! Estimated spend for that is £55.14 which I dont think is to bad for the week. They have 2 litres of The one milk for £1 so have ordered loads of that to fill the freezer. Also for anyone making christmas cake./puds they have 2 for £1 on dried fruits! Oh and Charmin toilet roll 4 pack is cheaper then their own brand at the moment! Prefer to shop online as I find I keep a tighter grip of my spending as you can see it all adding up as you add it to your trolley rather than get a shock when you get to the checkout in store!

What I like with them is that if they have to substitute anything you wont pay more even if its a more expensive item - unlike T's!! They have a nasty habit of substituting there own cheap stuff with brand names at twice the price!

Off to make some more bread now, and maybe a few cakes etc to keep the kids happy over the weekend!
    GC Sept - £147.75/£280
2 Adults, four kids, 3 Gerbils, [strike]6 Fish[/strike]! Down to 5 - well I suppose its one way of saving money!!
  • Peanut Butter Cookies
These are remarkably cheap if you use Tesco value pb at 45p a jar (approx)

A BIG thank you to Angelnikki who did the conversions for me!

    1/2 cup / 125g / 4.5oz butter or marg
    1/2 cup / 115g / 4oz granulated sugar
    1/2 cup / 115g / 4oz brown sugar
    1/2 cup / 150g / 5.5oz peanut butter - I use crunchy
    1 egg
    3/4 tsp bicarb of soda
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    1 & 1/4 cup / 150g / 5.5 oz sieved flour (I have used self raising but don't think it matters much)
    1/4 tsp salt
    • Cream butter and sugar and pb together. Beat in egg and then stir in all other ingrediants.
    • Shape dough into balls, place on lightly greased baking sheets.
    • Dip fork into flour and then press down onto the balls to make ridges. Flour stops fork sticking to dough.
    • Bake at 180 degrees/350 degrees F for about 10 mins.
    Makes about 26

    Hope you enjoy!

Can't wait to give these a go! I'll report back on how they turned out. :)

    Thanks for the recipe!
  • That cupcake looks amazing Shaz. Yum!

Does anyone know if there is any full fat milk on offer anywhere?
Trying to scan the pages but can't see anything other than The one @£1 but I need to half/half it so not ideal for us.

    MAY GROCERY CHALLENGE   £0/ £250

  • Jakk - I think the 4 cans of Princes Tuna is £2.49 at the moment at both Somerfield and Tesco too. I also tried Tescos Basic tuna last week (only £0.30 odd pence) and this was fine mixed in with Princes tuna in a pasta bake.

I like Princes when the tuna will be a cold ingredient, and the Basics one when in a pasta bake, or a 'gumbo' (which we invent regularly! We add sweet potato, green beans, olives, sweetcorn tomatoes and tuna, mix with some mayo = dinner!)

Thanks for the info about the tuna. I got some Princes x4 in MrT. Might get some basics next time and cheat a bit ;)

Sorry can't remember who posted about proving bread overnight. I know it goes against the grain, but it helps if you use cold water to mix if you want to do this. The rise will be slower and less likely to fall flat again. It also helps to let it slowly warm up a bit before baking.

This came from my dad who was a baker in a small family business and I did my bread etc, for years this way. I am always in too much of a rush since I got back into bread making, but hope to try it again this weekend as it actually saves on the waiting time.

I will not spend this weekend (don't NEED the Costco offers this week) as I was near a Tesco extra yesterday so got enough to last till next weekend and spent enough to save 5p/litre on my petrol that I needed anyway to get me the 15 miles home! Not all spent from the GC though. Glad I didn't wait till I got to my nearest Tesco on the way home, the petrol was 6p a litre more

Just updating... have spent £38.12 so far this month. Would have been less but im not well so sent OH to pick some bits up from tesco and he got the expensive versions of almost everything!

This was the list what he spent in black, difference between the usual spend in red.

    Bread - £1.29 - +52p
    Milk - £1.44 - 0p
    Eggs - £1.65 - +77p
    Lentil soup - 68p - +29p
    Cheese - £2.45 - 0p
Baked beans - £1.99- +£1.18 (beans really should be £1.79 more expensive as we only need 1 tin not a 4 pk like he got but i'll do it like-for-like comparison)

    Total = £9.50
    If id gone: £6.74
    Overspend difference: £2.76
I know that doesnt sound much because the bill was small anyway...

    Geeky maths moment warning:

but when you put it as a percentage i make it 29% more!!!
    AND
If you include the fact i only wanted one tin of beans... that takes it up to £3.37 overspend.. which means it cost 35% more!!!

Imagine if i sent him everyweek... over a month that could amount to £56 a month more because he preferred to buy heinz beans, warbutons bread and eggs that told him they were laid in lancashire!

Good job were so under budget anyway...
  • Hi all

Just amending my siggy as we needed potatoes and bleach (OH says he can't see Stardrops anywhere in the supermarket but I think he just keeps forgetting:rotfl: )

Treacle the cat has decided to be more OS by eating moths, tho I am not sure they can replace Whiskas as her daily menu.

Mrs Moneypenny - you are welcome, I had about another 12 ripe ones this morning and have been eating them every time I walk past the bowl!
Purple skies - the cookies are fool proof, you will love them!!
Shaz - that cupcake looks sooo pretty!

Home made bread from the breadmaker for lunch - my OH put it on before he went to work last night and is very excited!

Good luck with all your personal challenges today!

To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough.

It sure does. Grocery wise so far I have spent nothing and got my free milk :j bought whole so I could water it down:rotfl: I always said I said I would never do that as it was too tight :o

Husband still believes that we only have £4.90 to spend on groceries until the 1st :rotfl:

Good job as we just spend £15 in wilkinsons buying a table and chair set and a new parsol base.

I am not sure if I am off to reduced to clear frenzy tonight. Don't really need anything but would hate to think I missed out :rotfl: But do need some more fuel. Also it going means I might loose my parking space outside my house.

    Yours

  • Feeling like a stranger but now with a bit of organising I am getting back on the forum a little more often.

Did a great chicken fajhita earlier in the week and made an extra one no one wanted so covered it in cheese popped in ove and gave it to OH with chips and salad whilst the kids had sausage (whoopsied) beans and chips.

OH is taking me out tonight so I feel a korma coming on but I always bring half of it home and the kids will be having baked bean chili and rice from the freezer.

DD8 has a friend coming over for swimming tomorrow so we'll make HM pizzas
and those peanut cookies sounds great.

Still have a whole chicken,8 chicken fillets,4 fish fillets, massive pork joint in the freezer for the coming weeks.

Made the chicken fajhita filling into pasta salad for OH packed lunch which was really nice cold with the chicken, onion, peppers and seasoning mixed with cooled pasta spirals and mayo a dash of black pepper.

May need a couple of bits over the weekend and will take some uht milk from work to tide us over till tomorrow.Just as well I own the place I can have a run round the storeroom!!!!!!!!

Not sure if this is the best place, but it's about not wasting food, so it kind of fits (?)

I have been making blackberry jelly and now have a load of blackberry 'mush'. Has anyone ever used this mixed in with (say) apple in crumbles? Seems a shame to throw it - I was figuring I could sweeten slightly and mix with apple for a pud this weekend :-) What do people think?
