Thanks all. I'll have a look on ebay later to see what's on offer and I'll check out the elegantbaby website.

If it's true that a moses basket will only last a few months, and the advice is for a baby to sleep in mum and dad's room for the first six months, then what do people do without spending a fortune? It wasn't a problem with first-born because we only lived in a tiny flat and there was no choice *but* to have him in the same room as us. But now I've got a nursery set up with a cot-bed, and I want a temporary (and cheap) method of having the baby sleep in our bedroom for six months, without actually having the baby in bed with us.

Any suggestions, if the moses basket is too small? I don't really want to have to buy another cot, and I also want something that can be taken downstairs (unless I let baby sleep in the bouncy chair during the day).

well my little boy slept in his moses basket for about 9 weeks then he was really too big for it (and he was only 6lb10 when he was born so only little). Then we just put his cot bed in our bedroom and thats where he sleeps now until probably 6 or 7 months. During the day we have a travel cot in the living room although he would rather sleep in his bouncy chair. And at the minute I'm trying to get him into the routine of going to sleep in his cot for his big morning and afternoon naps. I just put the monitor on if he's sleeping in the bedroom.

so why not just bring the cot into your bedroom and have a travel cot in the living room.

My daughter bought one of these But didn't bother with a stand. She used it as you say for being able to move it around the house when baby was asleep. She has just stopped using it and her baby is 11 weeks and is pretty big at 13lb.

I can't really bring the cot-bed into our bedroom as it's enormous. We did it when we lived in the flat because we had no choice. I'm now looking at the Quinny Dreami, which attaches to the Quinny Buzz base:

Seems like I could get the Dreami on eBay for about £40, and if I'm patient I could get the whole set (carrycot + push-chair base) for less than £100. Anybody got one?

yep my friend has one although i think her baby grew out of sleeping in that even faster than my baby grew out of his moses basket. i've got just the quinny push chair and base and as a buggy i really like it, its relatively light and very maneuverable. But I don't think the dreami will solve your problem cos as i said they don't fit in them for long, I was gonna buy one but thought better of it and got the moses basket and travel cot instead for roughly the same price.

We've got a cot bed too and yeah they are big but if you want your baby in the same room as you until they are 6 months I think thats the only thing thats gonna work. If you got a moses basket the baby could sleep in it for maybe the most of 3 months so you would only have the cot in with you for 3 months.

yeah i just checked the details of the dreami and its only suitable up to 15lbs, my baby is 3 months now and 14lbs and he was only 6lb 10 when he was born, so i would imagine the max time you'd use it for is up to 3 months. If space is tight in your bedroom you could maybe use a travel cot but I'm not sure how suitable these are for long term use, you'd have to check this out.

What about just buying a big washing basket and a small mattress to go inside? ;)

I do have a travel cot, which I could keep downstairs for daytime naps, but I don't think it's supportive enough to use long-term for night-time sleeping.

My 2 ds was 8 lb 14 at birth dd 8 lb 11, the moses basket lasted until they were about 12 weeks. I had their cot in our bedroom and put them in that at night. Moses basket was for daytime naps, when ds outgrew his I put travel cot up in our living room- had to re-arrange the furniture and move an arm-chair to the baby's bedroom to do so - of course it wasn't being used at this point cos he was sleeping in our room. With dd we'd moved to a bigger house and can't completley remember what I did, but it might have been to leave her in her pram to sleep during the day.

i really think the only thing you can do has the baby gets past 3 months is put them in a cot. A crib might do a bit longer but they are expensive and not portable (but then you could use the travel cot in the living room and the bouncy chair) mothercare does one that suits up to 6 months http://www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B000JEG4SY/sr=1-9/qid=1219945128/ref=sr_1_9/202-0348760-9131028?ie=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=44361031&mcb=core

Actually, I like the look of that - so if it's only £99 new I should be able to get a second-hand one from eBay for much cheaper. I notice that Mothercare do a similar one for £59. So I guess then I'd just need a matress + some bedding (although once they start to kick I prefer the little sleeping bags) and use the travel cot for daytime naps. And then once I've finished with it I can sell it myself...
