  • I still don't understand.

saxon insurance is still cheaper than SIS as well. £25 for the following cover:

    All details here: http://www.saxoninsurance.com/studentshieldInfo.asp

£25 excess, £10000 max value of contents cover! plus everything listed above, and then you can add on sports protection, bicycles and laptops, for not much more!

They have been the cheapest for me for the past 3 years. Luckily I haven't had to claim against them though :)

It must be to do with the area you are in, because I think mine was closer to £100.

Wiggynut, insurance cover is easy to calculate. Simply add together the rough cost of everything you own and thats the amount you need to insure for! As a guideline, the average 3 bedroom house, fully furnished, would cost somewhere in the region of 40k to replace absolutely everything. Like you I was a mature student (just graduated!) and shared a flat. Alot of insurers don't like covering shared properties, so you need to hunt around. Try contacting insurance brokers rather than particular companys. The insurer I found was covering 40k contents on full a/d cover, bikes outside the home and cpntents up to 5k outside the home, with a £50 excess for £130 a year. Brilliant cover seeing as everyone else was quoting over twice that amount.

As for Endsleigh insurance, they are hugely expensive for a tiny amount of cover. I'd recommend anyone try the brokers first, as your far more likely to get things like your laptop covered if it's outside your home. If you look at the small print, alot of student policies wouldnt do things like cover your laptop if you took it to lectures.... And yes, you do need to consider things like the cost of replacing your clothes, books etc if anything does happen and you need to claim. I used to work in home insurance and had to tell more than a few customers that as they were underinsured, they'd have to choose what they didn't want us to replace. More often than not, they chose to replace clothes themselves and then soon regretted it once they realised how much it costs to replace ABSOLUTEY EVERYTHING!!!

how did you find a broker?
I have no idea myself and the student insurance I've been looking at all seem rather vague as to what is covered.

I need my digital SLR and camera equipment covered (obviously taken out of flat) and my new Mac, Wacom tablet & other equipment covered... guess something general for books, clothes and other bits and pieces.
guess it would be nicer to talk to someone and get clarification - ie: will it be covered if it breaks down, stolen, lost etc... and I don't want too much excess to pay either.

    Thanks for your help

  • OK I've gone with SIS as it was only £80! This is compared with £180 for Saxon and £206 for Endsleigh. Karma was confusing as I wasn't sure if i was covered for unlocked rooms. I checked SIS out on the FSA and its all regulated and everything.
  • do any of these include mobile phone insurance?
I have read through but it's all mind-numbing to me, however I realise its importance and will take out a policy.

Considering I am paying £10 p.m. phone insurance anyway I might as well pay a bit extra for contents insurance!
