  • Seriously those quotes are WAYYY to high.

Try SIS Direct, i had them during my first year, very helpful and really competitive. Just about to renew for year 2 in fact :p

    I still don't understand.

saxon insurance is still cheaper than SIS as well. £25 for the following cover:

How Much Am I Insured For?
You select the cover you need for your contents based on your individual requirements, your contents are then insured for their full value (subject to a total value of £10,000) on a new for old basis, except for clothing and household linen where a deduction will be made for wear and tear.

Policy Benefits and limits that apply
    Limits Maximum amount
Collections of CDs, DVDs, other media £500
    Personal money £50
    Credit cards £500
Legal responsibilities to third parties £1,000,000
Legal responsibilities as a tenant £5,000
    Locks and keys £150
    Freezer food £25

    All details here: http://www.saxoninsurance.com/studentshieldInfo.asp

£25 excess, £10000 max value of contents cover! plus everything listed above, and then you can add on sports protection, bicycles and laptops, for not much more!

They have been the cheapest for me for the past 3 years. Luckily I haven't had to claim against them though :)

  • Well for my area Saxon are quoting me £33 on its own for contents cover. Then another £35 for laptop cover!! Making it £68...

SIS are doing me £2000 contents cover, and then £1000 Accidental Damage anywhere in the uk 'Computer' cover which covers laptops and all related peripherals including scanner, printer, software cd's etc plus with free Vacation Cover. My quote is currently £29 with SIS. (£25 excess)

    Me thinks they are cheaper!!

    I don't live in student accommodation - it's a private rented flat.
I've never had insurance before so I'm clueless on how much I'm suppose to go for!
plus, I've never been burgled and if any of my stuff goes missing it's mostly down to the others who share the flat!

but I would want to insure my Mac, HDD, scanner and digital camera equipment.

I don't really own much other stuff except 200+ books (not actually counted them!) Wii console ;-), futon (I was given this free!), freeview box (v cheap - so not bothered), clothes, - most of my stuff is small items, like wool, darkroom stuff... but how do i figure how much this comes too in order to have it insured.

These companies ask how much you want the basic cover to be.. how do I know this?
SIS and saxon don't have cover for cameras (which is obviously taken outside of my flat)

I can't seem to qet a quote for Natwest (I'm opening a student account with them) I'm currently have a bank account with HSBC so might have to check theirs.

it's all too complicated as you never really know what is covered and what gets excluded.. some do, some don't and I end up confused! lol

ps: no parents and I'm a mature student.

what does it mean by Excesses exactly?
also, what would a digital camera come under... single item cover?

  • Was just quoted by cover4students for a similar amount that Endsleigh want but the excess is £10 as opposed to £25.
Should I be bothered about their lack of high street representation and answering the phones 24h per day every day (only Mon-Fri 9-5), and what is the difference between cover4students and More Than, because the quotes are exactly the same but I've actually heard of More Than.

natwest have launched a new home ins last month called essentials aimed at the student market. pop in to ur branch get a quote.
  • Wiggynut, insurance cover is easy to calculate. Simply add together the rough cost of everything you own and thats the amount you need to insure for! As a guideline, the average 3 bedroom house, fully furnished, would cost somewhere in the region of 40k to replace absolutely everything. Like you I was a mature student (just graduated!) and shared a flat. Alot of insurers don't like covering shared properties, so you need to hunt around. Try contacting insurance brokers rather than particular companys. The insurer I found was covering 40k contents on full a/d cover, bikes outside the home and cpntents up to 5k outside the home, with a £50 excess for £130 a year. Brilliant cover seeing as everyone else was quoting over twice that amount.

As for Endsleigh insurance, they are hugely expensive for a tiny amount of cover. I'd recommend anyone try the brokers first, as your far more likely to get things like your laptop covered if it's outside your home. If you look at the small print, alot of student policies wouldnt do things like cover your laptop if you took it to lectures.... And yes, you do need to consider things like the cost of replacing your clothes, books etc if anything does happen and you need to claim. I used to work in home insurance and had to tell more than a few customers that as they were underinsured, they'd have to choose what they didn't want us to replace. More often than not, they chose to replace clothes themselves and then soon regretted it once they realised how much it costs to replace ABSOLUTEY EVERYTHING!!!
