    Hm. not much cheaper. £68.

Still not sure whether to get insruance though.

Its the laptop that does it for me. Doubles the cost. Its the only thing I want insured really, nothing else in house is decent, asda tv, cheapo freeview box and clothes.

Just looked up my Endsliegh quote again, £73. So £5 difference.

Your postcode must be seen as dodgy compared to mine. :rotfl:

  • Sorry to revive this thread from necrosis, but I've just realised I have to get on top of this and my insurance situation may be more complex than most. I am taking a desktop and laptop [+ all the usual items] to Halls, this would be simple, but I'm an IT enthusiast and I have built the PC myself and the laptop has received various upgrades. Will such items be covered by the New for Old policies of Endsleigh/SIS/Saxon? It's not clear to me from their terms.

Also to calculate the value of my desktop do I sum the original value of the components? Can I count the components as single items for the purposes of a limit on the value of covered singe items?

    Thanks

It sounds like your in the same boat as myself, I've built my own PC, but now because the parts are over a year old it will probably cost less than £1000 to replace (omitting the data obviously). They will obviously intend to replace your PC like for like, components wise not price wise I am presuming.

You could always give them a call to ask. I have used Saxon the past few years and have found their allowances more than generous, standard desktop cover is £1250 iirc. So unless you have an uber PC (phase-cooled? :D ) costing more than that I wouldn't worry. I doubt you'd be allowed to list each component as an individual item, as they only work together as a complete system.

Also on a side note, please be aware that a lot of unis block ports to stop you from playing online games [they can be quite cunning, believe me], so the best you can normally do is play on the uni network in a sort of LAN game :)

Thanks for the advice, I'm still to find which Halls I'm in [as I'm only off in mid-October] but once I do I'll put round some calls as you advise. Having done a rough totalling of the cost of my components they're less than £1250 [assuming I don't count speaker system/monitor].

As for the gaming issue, I'm going to York and as of last year they dropped network restrictions and people I know up there in the Computer Science department have no trouble with running such applications now, but the IT department heavily monitor for p2p, which isn't something I have any interest in. Seems I'm quite lucky in this respect.
  • Who has dealt directly with Karma and Saxon? I need to purchase by Saturday, and these have been the cheapest quotes. Just anxious as I haven't heard of them before.

I've used saxon pretty much every year. very efficient and extremely helpful. Highly recommended!

They are underwritten by some big name insurer, norwich union or someone :s
