Err, you didn't "explain" anything to me. You came out with some half-baked speculative theory that Motorway Services in the UK might have higher land/rent costs. You also speculated that maybe European ones don't have to open 24 hours (which is actually incorrect in the case of most European countries).

You provided nothing to back up these theories - and even admitted yourself these were "guesses off the top of your head".

Even if your theory about motorway services was true, how is it analogous to the cost/reliability of trains?

Are you saying railways have higher land/rent costs in the UK than in Europe, and that's why our system is less reliable and more expensive? Do enlighten me with your knowledge! Because I was under the impression that our railways and stations were owned by Network Rail which is state owned.

Motorway services and rail systems are completely different economic models. The railway system is complex and political, and I really don't think you know the first thing about it.

Once again we see how you routinely criticise others for failing to back up their allegations with hard evidence, but we're supposed to accept your wild, vague, sweeping, speculative theories as argument-winners.

If you knew you were "write" (right) you wouldn't have to spend "ages going through Google", would you? You'd have the knowledge to hand.

Stop it! Your level of insight and business acumen is making me dizzy!

Go back and read my earlier post and give it some more thought. It's not about how much money goes in to a system, it's about how wisely that money is spent.

Billions have been pumped into the UK rail network in the form of massive government subsidies (our taxes) and spiralling ticket prices, but the system is so chaotic and badly managed that we never see improvements. Any economist will tell you how these billions have been p*ssed up the wall.

Absolutely first class post taxiphil! Thanks.

Sam - sometimes posters get thanked just because someone agrees with their opinion rather than because their post is helpful in a truly useful sort of way.

Got a lot of thankyou's as well though haven't I!

From a tiny number of people who form a cartel of trolls, systematically giving mutual thanks to each other. Every person in this cartel has an ulterior motive which explains their hatred of consumers (in a nutshell, they either got sacked from their jobs or their businesses went down the pan because they lacked customer service skills).

Once again, uktim29 has ducked out of answering all the points I raised. He's completely out of his depth and can't engage in a reasoned, intelligent debate.

    All speculation.

Which again is speculative. I'm not spending half an hour of my time trolling through Google to disprove your guesswork.

You don't back anything up Phil, it's all Phil say's.....

We get this all the time from you "All other countries". Well move then!!! I'm sure they need Taxi drivers in Paris as well.

You have a habit of disappearing from threads when I've proved you wrong before. At least I'm honest, and tell you I'm not going to spend time arguing with you because I can't be assed. No, it's not "because you're wrong" which your reply will no doubt claim. It will simply take more time than I intend to spend on the issue of bloody trains!!!

Good grief I bet the OP never thought that a simple and sensible question would turn into such long and in some cases a very spiteful thread.

I get the feeling this thread has come to an argument. With uktim29 at the heart of most of them. uktim29 do you spend all day on these boards, you seem to post hell of a lot of posts.

Thanks taxiphil and Scubaangel . I am glad some people see the complaint as worthwhile.

Those who say my argument is petty - why are you spending so long on here saying so, and starting your own petty arguments?

And whoever said I should stand the whole journey. Why should I??

Indeed you shouldn't have to stand for the whole journey. If you've booked a seat, then you should get your seat, and if they ask you which direction you want to face, then you should be able to have what you specified. Otherwise what's the point of allowing people to book in advance??

The sad fact is that UK railways have been ruined by mis-management and poor planning. SO much money is ploughed into them, but terrible structure and management mean that a large % of this money is squandered and not spend where it ought to be.

I've given up complaining, and tend to drive now. I've been on trains where people had to sit on the tables as the carriages were so crowded (yet oddly 2 empty first class carriages...), no reservations working, people smoking on the train, trains terminating for no reason at some random station, with very little help on how to get to destination etc...

The whole system needs to be re-nationalised and have a decent management company running it.

As for timtims, just ignore him. If you look at all his previous posts, you'll find he's a rather sad and somewhat bitter individual who perhaps has nothing better to do with his time.

What was either simple or sensible about his question?

Yes, but I don't know how Sam93. I'm new here and seen enough not to post for advice. Someone will come along soon to tell you.

If you PM the guide for this board (Godders), he/she (sorry not sure!) will lock the thread for you to stop this pathetic tittle tattle.

Double standards. Just by writing that you're a hypocrite.

I voice my opinion which I'm entitled to. I don't however go insulting other posters unprovoked like you just have.

It depends if you consider "sad" and "bitter" as insulting... Some people are rather proud of those titles!!

I would never use a genuine insult.
