Well MBNA run cards such as Virgin are good if you handle them in the right way. The positive points are :

    (a) Higher than average Credit Limits
    (b) Very low Minimum Payments when on a promotion
    (c) Transfers of funds direct to your bank account
    (d) Good track record for existing customer offers
    (e) Moving Credit Limits across multiple cards

However, from reports on this site, if you handle them wrong, ie end up on their standard variable rate, miss a payment, break your credit limit etc then they turn and bite you.

I think the answer is always manage an MBNA account with extra care to avoid them turning on you
  • I apply for another, phone them up and ask them to slide the credit limit across.

Was thinking about that. Going to apply for the Virgin card, but already got zero balance on an 8K Alliance and Leicester card.
So, to make sure you get the same credit limit, is it best to phone in your application and ask to switch the limits over and close the old A&L card?
    Is this normally successful?

I would say so yes. Indeed, I'll be doing the same thing in a few weeks (albeit with different MBNA run cards).

At the very least it'll save a few days/a week or so whilst they write to you reminding you that you already have an MBNA run card and asking you to call them to discuss your application.

I wouldn't close the old card down though. If you keep it open, with a small credit limit, you can always switch limits around later when you have cleared both cards and an offer appears on one or the other.

It’s interesting that this thread is showing mostly good things about MBNA.

My experience, admittedly a few years ago, is that they moved ‘pay by’ dates nearer at random intervals, and slapped on late payment charges when there was no way we were late in paying. I suspect that their policy is when they’re not getting chunks of money from you, they find a way to do so.

This does appear to be a trick that they employ from time to time - clio was complaining of this earlier.

Well bear in mind that they reserve the right to change the Terms and Conditions when they see fit ;)
  • They ;ike to increase interest rates to a horrid amout, after your 0% But on the plus side if you have a 0% deal with them it is very good and normally lasts a while.
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!

As an extra point, MBNA also regularly have existing customer 0% offers. I'm currently in the middle of a 0% Balance Transfer offer. Thanks to the fact you can transfer money to your current account as a BT it can be very useful as even if you're debt free you can stooze the money straight away where as a purchases card you have to drip feed.

Are these 0% offers for existing customers a regular thing for everyone, and is it just balance transfer offers? I've been considering an MBNA Platinum Card for a while and didnt realise there was a chance of further 0% offers after the introductory period!

Do any other card companies do this as well?!
