Sorry didnt mean to offend anyone, I love my children to pieces and would do anything for them, even if it means the right think is to stay here, just so confused at the mo, if we had the support of everyone we would have the courage to do it.
Im worried now that we will be homeless, wouldnt want to take a council house of someone who couldnt afford to rent privately0 -

then when youve paid for it and need care (god forbid) the council snatch it to pay for the care even if you have both worked and paid tax and Ni for all your life, what security for the kids then?
so the millions of kids in rented (private or welfare) housing are not secure?
kids (CHILDREN actually, kids are young goats) need love, warmth, food and clothing, not mum and dad stressed and at work 70 hours a week to keep a roof over their heads
I agree, here most people who post on here have interest only mortgages thats dead money not only will you never own your home but your also responsible for maintaining it too!!!!
I have said before I will never get a mortgage property again, no matter how much I earn in the future. Its just not worth the hassle. If you loose your job you loose the roof over your head, at least with renting you can claim HB ect, im in council its a small 2 bed terrace but its enough for us two and the animals. ITs only 370 per month with water rates included. Utitilites are acceptable as its small. If anything goes wrong just ring the council up and they come and sort it. no worries about broken boilers, leaking roofs, damp or anything. Ok its not the greatest area in the world but its not the worst either.
I dont have any plans on doing so in the near or distant future. I feel like I have a lot of security living here, they only evict you if you have loads of rent arrears or are being stupid with the property. I can honestly see myself living here in 10 years time even if i got back upto earning £32k a year.
I know private renting is different as you have short term contracts, and can be a worry, but a family member lives in a private rented house, and it has been sold once and they are still there, and they pretty much been told they can stay there until 2027!!! Its a nice house and my brother even fitted a new hand made kitchen in it!!! The Landlord is ok with him so my brother looks after the property, it works really well.
Owning your own house has a certain amount of Snob value to it, always had always will, but its only bricks and mortar its family life that makes a home not the walls and roof. Although I would prefer a rented roof that didnt leak to a mortgaged one that did."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. You need to stop thinking like that, properties are means tested if your entitled to one take it. I know what you mean, I am not bothered about the renting aspect as no money to be made in property anymore, just worried as to what will be the outcome and can I get over these damn nerves.
Perhaps cos everything is boxed up and once there will feel differently, just so nervous all the time.0 -
Ive read some positive experiences of people who are where you are now and once they have moved are overjoyed in there new homes.
I think the change of senery (sp!!) and still seeing there families happy and the children excited at getting new bedrooms ect is a real positive for them.
You will be fine, i know its easy to say dont worry, but if you take the bull by the horns and take that step you might suprise yourself and realise its not something thats going to kill you. Worst case scenario is that you end up owing the morgage people for a shortfall (how much?? no one knows until the repo and the property is sold). If that happens you deal with that further down the line. If it means BC then so be it, but dont even think about that until you have to. Private landords are leeches, 30 years ago they were a rarity, now, thanks to the right to buy and LA's attitude to rebuilding PL's get away with murder, high rents, holding deposits, kicking tenants out and/or increasing rents at will, they are unrestricted and unregulated, i thank the credit crunch and house value falls for scaring some of em to thier roots0

my mum and dad have rented a council house for 40 years
this where i quote the clever ones "oh council tenants have it cushy, blah blah blah"
well, my mum and dad are paying rent still, in full, whilst mortgages taken out 40 years ago have long since ended, they have only seen rent rises.....
i agree that some LA tenants (the giro/chav/asbo/hoodies/vikki pollards) are a net loss to the system but not all LA tenants can be classed the same.0 -
I agree max. I have lived here for 26 yrs and my rent is now £93 a wk and my CT is £123 a mth. Not exactly cheap but at least if anything goes wrong i just pick up the phone. There is a lot to be said for renting as opposed to buying. All i ever wanted was to buy my own home,it was the done thing,seen as responsible by my parents, a sign of posperity.

I agree with what you are all saying, daft I know but I havent got a clue about getting a council house, keep hearing about bidding etc, typed it in google but nothing really comes up.
Our new landlord does seem really nice but always in back of mind that we may havee to move around, my mum and dad rented and I was moved around alot , never really settled anywhere.
I suppose just last minute nerves which I think everyone would go through0
