Ahh the joys of trying to find somewhere in Bristol...

I second the Brislington recommendation for what you want, whats the area around talbolt hill called? Also try the area around st werburghs (spelling?) as its very close to bedminster but a bit nicer, totterdown is good but parking can be an issue especially on the hills. If you're feeling fit try the area around wells road from the bottom of the hill to broadwalk - but dont go any further up!

North city try out on the severn beach train line (anywhere past lawrence hill should be fine), clifton wood, hotwells and redland are all great for 'high street' style.

Do not go anywhere where you are reliant on the bus to get to the city centre...it rubbish, slow, overpriced and always late!

I'm sure other posters will have some more suggestions, but I always think of parkway/filton/cribbs etc as a bit horrible and souless - they're certainly not in the city proper...if you're going to go that far out what about Westbury on Trym?
  • I think it depends if you like city life or prefer a bit of a less hectic life than close to the centre. I live north bristol, 15 mins for mall, bradley stoke way and i would never live closer to the centre as its too much in the city for my liking. But being where we are i am close enough to have cribbs causeway close at hand for nearly everything i need. But also not that far away from the country if i wanna get in the country for a drive or anything.

So yeah i think its down to what you like.

If looking over this way i would say the two main letting agents if you are going through them are Lifesyle and woods.
So might be worth having a look with them.

Personally, I completely hate the city centre of Bristol. My two favourite shops are a half hour walk apart!

We need something with local shops/takeaways, anything else I'd go shopping for..just something with a feel of community.

Westbury on Trym is a nice place. Quite expensive though.

What about Portishead? Close to M5, but about 15-20 mins further south if you have to go to Exeter and it has good bus routes. (Woods estate agents are based here as well).

I'm renting in Little Stoke at the moment, been here just over a year, same age as you.

Ours is £575pcm for a 2 double bed ground floor flat - garage, driveway, front and rear garden.

Bus is a bit rubbish into city centre (73), although it stops 2 mins away, it never seems to be on time or actually appear?

Parkway is good, and there is easy access to motorways, Exeter ~ 1:15 and if it's a nice time you can get all the way down the M5 without touching your brakes.

Drive into city centre down M32 is reasonable enough if you get out ~7.00-7.40, leave it later and you can start hitting really slow traffic.

You can get everything you need in local area, nothing more than a bike ride to B&Q etc. Cribbs is within 10 mins away with cinema, bowling, restauraunts, shopping.

Never been tempted by the pubs so far though. Rather sit in the backgarden with a beer and bbq. :D

Meatballs - All the sounded perfect till you said you had a flat! I'm definitely steering clear of flats now...just don't like them at all. Garden would be lovely though, thats what I'm missing so much at the moment.

I've never looked into Stoke Gifford...is it near that big retail park with a Matalan and JJB sports?!

If you look at the links i gave you, you can get houses for the prices you said.

Stoke gifford is next to parkway, and not far from Abbeywood retail park where you mention although when we were looking the parking was terrible!

ish... I remember when all that was just fields ;), about a mile away where parkway station is is where I think Giffy proper starts... lots of bovis homes from the 80s (but they're nice and all have own drives, all detached/link semi where i'm thinking). and new builds... I read the Bristol observer last week and rents are cheapish.

I second these locations - all good if you would like to go out a lot in the evening.
If you don't and are likely to go to cribbs or away for the weekend a lot the Bradley Stoke (house prices have quadroupled since it was called Sadly Broke" so the locals might be cheerier now) Stoke Gifford area would be better. I'm personally not a fan of Little Stoke or this end of Bradley Stoke, but thats just my opinion. Also if you or your other half are working in Filton/Aztec West you might find a lot of your collegues live in Bradley Stoke which might give you a community feel - Despite the new shops etc it does not have and won't have from the current plans a community shop type focus. It also takes 45 mins on the bus to the city centre and about £20 in a taxi.
