Relocating to Bristol

Hey guys,
Just after a bit of advice. Me and partner (24 and 22) may be moving to Bristol after our current tenancy in Gateshead (5mins from Newcastle) ends in January next year. Obviously starting to look at the options we have now due to the distance.

Back in May, we viewed lots of houses with my partners best friend and boyfriend. We were at that point looking to rent a 1/2 bedroomed apartment/flat in Bristol but were obviously unsure as to areas. They ended up moving to Filton Road, which is undesirable to us becuase of parking.
So does anyone have any suggestions for an area of Bristol with the following:
*2 Bedrooms minimum (We want a study)
*House
*Garage/Allocated Parking
*Within a local community, with shops and easy access to city centre/Cribbs Causeway
*One of us doesn't drive so needs to be near a bus route that doesn't take too long
*Rent can be anything up to £650 pcm

Thanks, Gem

  • stoke gifford or bradley stoke? near to Filton and with Stoke Gifford, you have Bristol Parkway station walking distance - handy!
  • Bedminster is very near to the Centre and has lots of central areas and shops, otherwise brislington, st annes, st george, redfield you should be able to find somewhere in one of these areas.
I have lived in Bristol all my life if you want to know what certain areas are just ask and i can tell you.

Everyone we spoke to a few months back (including agents) said that Bradley Stoke was rubbish and if it wasn't for the Pizza Hut on the outskirts of it, they wouldn't have anything there! The houses do look lovely though.

As for Bedminster...we viewed a million apartments in Airpoint or the place just round the corner and found every price was like extortion for a box room, so we gave it a miss. I did like Bedminster though, is there houses with parking around that area?

yep, Sadly Broke in the last house price crash... but Stoke Gifford is nice and has quite a villagey feel if you go round the older bits rather than the newer developments. I'll live there when I eventually move back to sunny Bristol :D Two pubs back to back (they're OK... but don't bank your social life on them!). My sis lives in Severn Beach and you get loads for your money there, but can be a bit isolated.

Thats what the agent called it too!! But I was scared of offending anyone so didn't say!

The massive problem I have, is that I'm originally from a village half an hour from Sunderland, but has it's own high street, shops, banks etc so I never felt cut off till I moved now. Now I live on a shiny new housing estate but with nothing but a Metro Station into Newcastle near me...so I need something thats very similar to what I'm used to. This is driving my partner mad, as they can't understand why I need a community near me!

Thats no longer the case really , large development being built in the centre , 10 mins for cribbs causeway , same for Bristol parkway , easy access to M5 , M4 & M32.

That would be cool if it has had a regeneration. I do need easy access to Exeter so getting onto the M5 easy and Parkway would be great. Thanks for the advice, I'll certainly have a look into that area again.

BS got a bad rep because when they built it as a new town it had nothing except houses really , and then it suffered from an excess of property and suffered during the last house crash.

Since then they have build schools (primary and secondary) a leisure centre & swimming pool , library , 3 tescos , Dr's, Aldi , 4 take aways, hair dressers , chinese restaurant etc etc. When the new complex is finished (soon) it will have more amenities than most other areas of Bristol (although its in S Glos not bristol).

I lived in Bedminster for the whole of one week - no offence to anyone who lives there, but I'm surprised to hear it recommended on this thread. I really enjoyed living on St Michael's Hill though (good points: lots of good pubs and places to eat, easy walk to city centre; bad points: so central that it's not quick to get onto routes out of the centre, and parking can be tricky, plus it's very studenty).
