Well I don't profess to be an expert on banking practices & procedures but banks have always relied on lending money and investing money to fund interest rates, so without these two practices how do you think banks will exist in the future?

You aren't that wrong - especially for the building societies who are more restricted than banks in what markets they can operate in.

For banks though, I believe they should have a much wider scope for investment returns around the world, although even then, there are slowdowns and difficulties all over the place - but also many opportunities.

For building societies especially, I suggest everyone keeps this in mind for the near future.
He acknowledges that if borrowers dwindled further then to balance the society's inflow and outflow of cash, savers rates might have to be cut.

Well that read pretty positively, I'm pleased to see.

14 - 18 Mths for a start of the recovery? I think that is a bit further into the future than I would have expected though.

End of next year at the latest I would guess.

I was referring only to the very real constraints building societies are under to maintain interest rates on savings, and not their recovery spin. ;)
  • Picledpink, I've no problem with the notion that people own their5 own homes outright, as you say, I will myself shortly.

However in your case you have the writing style of a child or at best an adolescent. You're clearly unable to debate in an adult and reasoned manner, able only to throw around silly insults to try and make your confused point. You simply come across as someone too young, immature and unintelligent to have gathered the wherewithal to buy and then pay off your own home.

And since (if what you say is true) you didn't, you simply married someone with money then I'd say that confirms it.

Maybe you should ask yourself this, do you really own your own home, or just live in your rich wifes house?

I wish my OH did that. Instead, he dumps his change on the dressing table every night, and it accumulates like mad.

DH does it too. I pick up all the £2 coins and the 20p pieces and squirrel them away. He (after lots of nagging) stashes the coppers somewhere till he has enough to make a trip to the bank worthwhile, but without nagging he'd clutter up every available surface with his change
