Why is it my richer clients drive old bangers?

What people need to do, is step back and look at this as a "Conrad post".
First, if you'd done things differently, you wouldn't be where you are now. So if your house burning/falling down gave you a lot of debt, then you should go back in time, and not buy that house. Similarly, if you were to die in a nuclear war, then you should have emigrated to Mars at the age of 15. To die in a nuclear war is obviously your fault, because you failed to do that.
Secondly, you should have old things. Never mind that cars above a certain age are a money pit, and the only person who can afford to keep an old Volvo going are rich, and who cares about Total Cost of Ownership? Old things are the key - that proves you don't care about what other people say (except Conrad - we all must care about what he says because he tells us so) - and how do you spell TCO anyway?
Thirdly - you must insure against everything. Lost your job? Insurance. Stroke? Insurance. Invaded by aliens? Insurance. Can't eat because you've spent all your money on insurance? Should have bought "I can't eat because I've spent all my money on insurance" insurance. Or emigrated to Mars at 15. Your fault either way.
Fourthly - What's happened to Simon Cowell? There is no mention! Has he sinned? For he is a God among men, and his high-waistband trousers are his temple!"Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

The kind of person who would come specifically to a board for people struggling with debt problems - which also contains several prominent threads about weight problems too - and post that money problems are people's own fault and weight problems are people's own fault has got to be some kind of troll surely?
That's not helpful to moneysavers is it? People are struggling for their LIVES on here.
To some extent I disagree - a lot of people's problems *are* their own fault, you can't change really bad luck, illness, economic climates etc but you can control your own behaviour and spending. It can be a little too supportive (collusive - oooh go on treat yourself) and crediting people with the intelligence and common sense to know what they can and can't afford isn't a bad thing in my opinion.
I think the car issue misses an important car - my car is sh1te - really sh1te - it cost less than 2k several years ago - however I had the cash to pay just under 2k when the last worse one exploded.... our office dogsbody has a newer flasher car on credit because they live in a cheaper rural area (can't afford near work) with no transport and when they needed a car to work they had no choice but to go with the finance dealer deal - didn't earn enough for a cheaper loan, so they are servicing 250-300pcm car credit forever..... which is going to cost them way more but it's the difference between the lump sum/someone willing to lend the lump sum cheaply.... thye didn't have they the cash to buy a banger upfront. The same goes for those young single workers renting paying 400-500 pcm for a room in a shared house - a couple would be paying comparable on a mortgage but no one will lend them that lump sum.... with no chance of that and cramped living conditions (most shared houses have extra bedroom rather than lounge in expensive areas) yep they do go out more and spend their money on that but they haven't got the choice of staying at home.0 -
Even though well off, they are careful with money.
No they are well off BECAUSE they are careful with money.0 -

Imagine you're in a hole with the rest of your family. Is it your fault? Is it Mrs BB's fault?
Did you know if you finger-point really vigorously, you can levitate?
Me neither...
This is a self-help group. Blame does not help. You can locate the "culprit" and you'll still be down a hole. This board gets people out of a hole. You can lay the blame later when you're out of the hole. In that case, we don't want to know, because blaming things is not helpful in getting out of a hole."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Jacks, I am sorry that you are so obviously upset by this thread, and I am really sorry that you have lost sleep over it, and you know I have never had any gripe with anything you have posted on here.
But your statement above is just as generalising.........there are a lot of us DFWs on here who work in the finance industry, and what you say above will be just as upsetting to those people as you find the other comments in the thread upsetting to you.
I am a stockbroker, Pania a mortgage adviser and Snaggles a mortgage underwriter.......just to highlight a few of the DFW regulars who battle with their finances just as much as those not working in the industry.
By generalising in your statement in this way, you are doing exactly the same as you feel Conrad is doing, and whilst I understand what you are saying, two wrongs don't make a right.
Point taken Hypno.
I would sincerely hate to upset anybody with one of my posts, and of course I should have realised that lots of DFWs work in the financial sector.
I myself work for a mortgage broker and I'm considering taking my CeMAP so that I can be one too.
What's holding me back is that I don't want to be one of those "bottom line, it's all about the numbers" people so maybe I was projecting.
I'll go back and rephrase my post.

Are you sure that's always the case?

Blame doesn't help, working out why you ended up in the hole does.
In alot of cases that may be because bad luck + the lack of 3 months savings = 3 months worth of debt which snowballs into alot more.
For some people the reason for the lack of savings is keeping up with the Jones, which is fine in their opinion because "they can afford it" and it fits in the budget, but if there's no back up plan, then the truth is, they can't there's something missing from the budget.0 -

Okey dokey sweetie, but I'm worried that one of of the "seriously considering suicide" , "can't cope", "can't go on" posters on here with serious debt problems might be pushed away from help and towards doing something stupid because of smug "it's all their own fault" attitudes.
I don't think DFW is the appropriate place for people to post judgemental, prejudicial and blaming opinions too many of us are in a delicate emotional state.
DFW is for support and help not attack.
That was my point really.
Conrad is free to expound on his objectionable beliefs anywhere he likes. It's a free country and all that.
I just don't think it's appropriate, kind or sensitive to do it here.

Honestly hon,
If I thought for a second that Conrad was here to try and help anybody I wouldn't be getting my knickers in a twist about this. I'd just think he was a misguided muppet who was trying to convince himself as much as us and leave it at that...
