Hey I notice in your sig you are pretty anti my industry.

You might, also, notice - if you look at my signature again, that I too was declared bankrupt. This does not mean that I went out and 'spent myself' into a position where 'bankruptcy' was the only way out, though.

ARGGHHHHHHHH, why have I just read this patronising drivel??????

I can honestly say, I've never read a thread on MSE which makes me so cross!!

Right, I'm off to see my dog. Who lives in a house opposite a pub.

Probably a roughish one, what, what, Jeeves get the Pimms ready I might need it on me return from watching said yobbo's outside said pub kicking said dogs.....probably best I let them get on with it eh, poor things are only doing it to release their frustration at their bad luck in life........:mad:

Great stuff, this really is great fun - and I mean that as a compliment, cheers.

A bit of robust debate gets the juices flowing, and afterall, nothing ever changed by remaining static.

We can pretend we aren't influenced by others comparative status, but I dont believe it.
TV ads / magazine ads work by attempting to wrestle dosh out of people by implying you aren't a fully rounded person without a new mobile phone or car (remember the ad where the cars are stopped at lights and the guy with the better car is more fanciable?)

Comparative status according to a lot of studies is the route causation in a large part of an individuals happiness factor.

    Hey, why so defensive?

As I say going bankcrupt was the best thing my bruv ever did.

I do see people who have gotten into trouble not by over spending, but though mistakes such as not saving from an early age to weather any storms.

However, I egeneraly dont see these mistakes as people's faults because we are all a product of the 'pure luck' inputs placed in our brains at times of high impressionability - notably in very early childhood.
These inputs run into millions and most we are not even aware of.

Furthermore there is growing evidence that GENES play a much more influencial role than previosuly thought.

Those pesky GENES may well ahev lead people to all sorts of mistakes.

As for fat GENES, defo, but probably not a single 'FAT GENE' as it were.

And what about 'mistakes' such as customers not paying their bills, escalating fuel costs and Government/media handling of Crises such as BSE and IRAQ? Or should we be budgetting for this?

I usually get mine in the Levi's Outlet store - is that a mistake too?

  • Yes I would recommend the Millionaire Next Door .The Authors set out to meet and interview hundreds of millionaires to find out what made them tick.Guess what living frugally was the main thread that ran through most of them and their lifestyle.Old cars were the norm even if they owned billions in assets .Look at Warren Buffet he drives a 10 year old car .

Okay, simon, but it is not 'driving the 10 year old car' that makes Warren Buffet rich.
I would, however, be interested to know what 'make' of ten year old car, Warren Buffet drives - I somehow doubt that it is a ten year old Citroen Saxo.

Whilst I totally agree that many of the richest people in the world actually live 'frugally', many of them have made their money by convincing the average 'man in the street' to live at, or beyond, his means.

I used to notice this when people had babies. The people who could least afford it (teenage mums) would buy all new equipment, the latest gadgets and designer baby labels.

The people who could afford to do this (had high paying jobs) used a lot of second hand equipment from friends and also used to dress their kids in a lot of hand me downs.

I think it is that the people who could afford it didn't care what people thought. They knew that they had money so didn't have to show they had it.
