You, as someone who earns his living by selling 'debt', should realise that your thread is going to promote division and ill-feeling on a forum which is dedicated to 'dealing with debt'.

I agree, I must appear a bit of an imposter, given my industry is all about flogging debt. I critiscise a lot of brokers on that section for perhaps being a bit irresponsible or so it seems.

AGAIN, 2 OF MY BROTHERS GOT INTO IMMENSE DEBT, ONE WHICH LEAD TO BANKCRUPTCY and when I was younger I bought a car I couldn't afford to insure, so I am no angel.
    I'm not sitting in judgement.

One thing I would say is a good robust debate can be more helpful and insightful than one where everyone just offers agreement and support. Support has a place but it is'nt the only agent for change.

If we such support each other and offer love, is that enough? Is it not better we have an idea for eample of what our GENES are up to, afterall it is they and they alone that control everything you do.

Oh yes they do............ everyone of your 2 trillion cells has the best computer ever built inside them. That computer is DNA - right now it's telling certain cells to go place themselves on the top of your left hand little figure , whilst others are being told to beomce the bottom part of that fingure whilst the outer older cells are being stripped away by other cells to be cast of ar dust 9that will incidentaly end up inside other creatures shortly after, and eventually be incoproprated into other humans through the food chain)

That same DNA controls the thing you think of as your mind. Whats happening is different chemicals are being mixed around your brain neurons which other brain cells then process as a need to aquire food.

In other words you are just a robot controled by DNA - something you cant even see.

BLIMEY, sorry for rambling off there, Im not sure how I ended up here
  • I think its a cracking debate to have regardless of motive .........

When I was a taxi driver the least well off would tip me (especially the OAP's) with a couple of sweeties or a 10p for the wee one and always ask how I was and how the wee one was

The new estate brigade would tip well but often engage in discussions of their new car /tv / holiday and then moan about us all being one pay day away from ruin.

The regulars from the best streets and biggest houses invariably did not tip just got in car paid up and had a nice chat, asking about me and my wee one and got out.

Note least and best well off were interested in me, the wannabes were interested in telling me what they had. Now who was my least favourite passengers ;)

Essentialy if you make choices for example at the age of 15 not to save, you might find that later on just when you need those savings they aren't there which then compounds the natural bad luck events.

A client with debt will say to me "I was injured so I cant pay the mortgage", but the rememdy to this was the simple process those in the camp of less bad luck would have gone though; Namely to have always saved.

But the person in the bad luck camp will then say "but I couldnt save as I has kids and not enough income"

But those in the good luck camp will have not allowed an unplanned pregnancy.

No one in my area suffers these, but lots of people do in another town close by.

Deja vu, conrad - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=594941 - and no more convincing this time around.

And, of course, we would not expect anyone as perfect as you to actually come from an area where, heaven forbid, there was ever such a thing as an 'unplanned pregnancy' - perish the thought.

Are you even sure you actually want to share your 'pearls of wisdom' with such obvious failures as us?:confused:

I agree. I once knew a multi millionaire who drove around in a ten year old car and never wore designer labels or an expensive watch because he didn't want to bring attention to himself. He figured out that this made him the centre of attention for thieves, robbers and muggers. But he was also the kind of guy who knew the value of everything, rather than the cost of everything. These values were emotional and spiritual, rather than financial so he was well grounded. He had no need to "outdo" his peers and was comfortable in his own skin. It seems to me that those who need to impress others with expensive cars, jewellery, etc are probably those who in reality are feeling pretty insecure and often are up to their eyes in debt.

There, thats the point of this thread.

By not harbouring feelings of jealousy you can feel better about yourself - a little.
To do this it can be useful to know that many many peoples apparant wealth is just a mirage.

'BANKRUPTCY' how terribly embarrassing for you, conrad  - how long was it before you would speak with him again?

Perhaps it was when you realised that 'buying a car that you could not afford to insure' was only one step away from actually being a serial murderer.

Still at least you're not 'Sitting in Judgement' - What a load of cobblers.

    Me - perfect - ha!

Grew up from age 9 on a council estate - plenty of people accidentaly got pregnant there, as I guess the contraception was less reliable than where I now live:rolleyes:

Again I've been bad with money and 2 brothers very bad.

    We all have bad luck.

I'm trying to help by offering the notion that we dont have to fall in to the trap of keeping up with the Jone's to make ourselves feel good.

IMHO you are preaching to the wrong audience. On DFW, we all know we don't have to keep up with the Jones's - this came about through our each individual LBM's.

Again, you are speaking to the wrong audience and sorry, I find this a bit patronising. I think we would all do things differently with hindsight and more knowledge about life - and ourselves.

sorry, but I find this rather patronising also. It is more than 'bad' or 'good' luck and to simply say 'well you should have saved then shouldn't you' is, to be honest, making me rather cross.

Its like chosing to go to a roughish pub - then sure enough you might meet a roughish parter who again will compound your bad luck, so why not make the decision not to go to these places and not to accept rough partners that kick the dog.
Right..........so that's every drinker who drinks in any pub that is not a middle class wine bar (many pubs have always been 'roughish' - it's because they are pubs) tarred with the same brush as being 'bad luck'..............righty ho........

Before you say it costs too much too eat well, I know all about it. I was part of a large family with low income but Mum made stews with spuds, carrots and mince and a loaf of bread to mop up. Junk food costs a lot more.

ahhhhhh, really............and there was me thinking me Maccy D's iz gonna get me mega savin's an' a Stella Artois-stylee 6 pack like..........

Humans evolved to be constantly active, constantly on the go or they did not survive. Your genes evolved to tell your body to get as much food on board as poss as it didn't know where the next meal was comming from.

Now it still has those same messages to keep eating, BUT THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS YOU DONT BURN IT OFF AS YOU DID WHEN YOU HAD TO TRUN A REINDEER INTO A COAT - OR FREEZE.

Cross counrty skiers need to eat 16000 calories a day and they dont get fat.
No of course Im not suggesting you get a pair of skis, what Im saying is the prinicple here is that if you act like a sloth, you will look like one.

    BUT I DONT HAVE TIME FOR EXCERCISE;

    Yes you do.

Tonight instead of JUST watching TV, hold out your legs in front of you for as long as you can and repeat for an hour.

ARGGHHHHHHHH, why have I just read this patronising drivel??????

I can honestly say, I've never read a thread on MSE which makes me so cross!!

Right, I'm off to see my dog. Who lives in a house opposite a pub.

Probably a roughish one, what, what, Jeeves get the Pimms ready I might need it on me return from watching said yobbo's outside said pub kicking said dogs.....probably best I let them get on with it eh, poor things are only doing it to release their frustration at their bad luck in life........:mad:

I helpd my bankcrupt brother out and actually encouraged him to go that route. Best thing he ever did.

Hey I notice in your sig you are pretty anti my industry.
Honestly, I agree with you. If you saw my rants against dodgy brokers on a private brokers forum you would have a different opinion of me - maybe:p
