Broadband without a landline?

Hi all.

I am due to move into my flat in the next couple of weeks and I understand that the property has a BT point and a sky aerial . Does anyone know if it’s possible to have broadband without having a land line? I am on a tight budget and would prefer not paying BT £10 per month just to have a fixed land line. Would wi-fi be an option or would I need a fixed line for that?

Any advice is appreciated.

You still need a telephone line for Wi-fi

You need a telephone line for broadband. You can use BT or if it is available in your area, cable.

  • Damn! I thought there was a way around it but obviously not. Thanks for the advice thou.
  • I use telewest broadband and you don't need a telephone line for that.
  • Hi Tuckerd

There are Wi-fi options out there which do not require telephone line, but these depend on the community around you.

For example there is a community Wi-fi service in Tameside (Manchester) which is called e-serv. The service they supply requires no telephone line, or cable.

So it is dependent on the area in which you live.

One option is whether your neighbour has broadband and wireless router and is willing to share the cost with you (depends on how well you get on with your neighbour!)

I set up one system for a family recently which shared one broadband connection between 4 houses with Wifi (the houses were all in very close proximity!), it meant that each house was paying about £5 per month.

So it depends on the community in which you live, whether it is your neighbour or whether it is a wider scale.

If i could get broadband without going to cable or adsl at a reasonable price then I would definately go that route.

    I hope this helps.

Telewest and NTL do not require a phone line.

See if either of these operate where you are living (they may also do you a cheap deal on cable TV (or a phone should you ever decide you want one) as part of a package).
  • Thanks guys,

I will definitely investigate the wi-fi options. I don't know any of my neighbours yet so it's certainly worth getting to know them!

I will find out whether the property is in an NTL area (I don't think it is) but I haven't given up yet!!
  • Wi-Fi does not need a land line, as it wireless. You can only connect to a Wi-Fi network if it's available in your area or someone has an unsecure network.

Telewest and NTL do not need a land line.

    Hope this helps

    Hi,

I'm in a similar position and I'm thinking of getting telewest broadband via a cable connection into my house.

The broadband connection at 512Kbs is around £15 with no download limits (I think)

I've also been told about VoIP but I'm not sure how this works (Voice over Internet). Basically you can buy a phone that pulgs into the cable connection (not the pc) that acts as a 'normal' phone (ie has a 'normal' phone number) but connects directly to the internet. This way you only pay £15 per month total for internet and a phone.

Has anyone got any more information about VoIP???????

To Check cable availibility visit :-

https://www.telewest.co.uk and https://www.ntl.co.uk - use their postcode checkers (although they are not 100%) - it might also be worth giving them each a call. Try looking up their numbers on https://www.saynoto0870.com

Regarding VoIP - I use it accross my Telewest broadband for a number of lines. There are a number of Paid-for and free options.

If you are not technically aware and not sure where to start - want to make and receive calls look at https://www.vonage.co.uk although they charge £10 p/m you get free hardware and free 01/02 calls included (Use 1899 to save money on mobile calls on your vonage line). If you just want a free incomming UK 01/02 number and perhaphs a few outgoing look at https://www.sipgate.co.uk (although 1899 does not seam to work on this service).

If you are technically aware look at services like Sipgate, voipbuster etc - via your own hardware you may wish to purchase.

    Good Luck.
