My top thing to avoid is:
Grim 'fresh' fruit & veg. Much of what turns up on my local's shelves seems partialy composted.

My top thing to buy is:
Their 2004 Bordeaux. Try finding an Appellation Controlee, Domain Bottled, Claret at £2.69 anywhere else. Recon it's excellent gargling plonk, Cheers
  • Aldi do a cheap wine called Baron St John - its available in red and white and I think it's delicious. Light and fruity and very good for drinking with anything or on its own. We usually buy half a dozen of each for a party and don't get any left over or any complaints! If memory serves me right it was about £2.35 a bottle last time we bought it.
  • Lidle Olive oil is excellent - a friend who runs a restaurant uses it all the time. We also buy the juices, meat, yoghurt and cheese regularly. Kitchen roll and toilet rolls are good value. Look at the wines - some are very good - eg Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon!

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Name Dropper I've been Money Tipped!
In Aldi I buy and think is nice is the tinned Ravioli 33p a tin and without knowing would have said heinz nice thick sauce. Multi grain bread 54p a loaf compared to Tescos and Asda which are 82p a loaf.

Frozen salmon is £1.69 for two pieces and rather then the rest of £2.99 or two packs for £5.

Tuna is £1.99 not tried it yet. But they had none in there the last time I looked.

That is it as I don't buy much else in there apart from the Toiffee (sp? Hazlenut sweets very yummy)which is £1.69 for 30 pieces in woolies it is about £3.50 for 40 pieces

My husband has the decaf coffee as it is £1.29 a jar compared to the others that charge £1.40 a jar.

Think that is about things I buy in there at the moment.

    Yours

    Calley

I used to work in a Lidl store, and I know that there is a reason for the 'quality' of their F&V at times - a lot of the work that is done is time pressured, so fruit that comes in goes underneath and the fruit that is older gets literally thrown on top! My tip to you, especially with bananas, is to dive into the bottom boxes - don't be afraid to open boxes!

Absolutely definitely do NOT buy the ready made tomato pasta salads, with sweetcorn and stuff. From personal experience, it doesn't digest properly - you'll be seeing it again, know what I mean?

Already vastly mentioned, but I'll add my weight to the argument - cheese and chocolate! Especially the brie - quite cheap, very tasty!

Oh and a Buy AND Don't Buy, all wrapped into one! The ready-made lasagne is delicious, so so rich and creamy, full of meat and I've never had a bad experience with one of them. Why should you not buy it? Because it is so so fatty and high in energy. For those who know the WeightWatchers system, the total Points value for it is in the region of 100. I'm on WW; I havea DAILY allowance of 27.

    OUCH.
  • Most food and drink from Aldi and Lidl's is excellent.
However, do NOT buy peanut butter from Aldi, it's not nice, but Lidl's is excellent. I think the detergents sold by both stores is disappointing. Lidl's lemonade is not nice. Lidl's 'Bailey's' is disappointing.
    Otherwise, no real complaints.

And, like petergoff, I go to Aldi in Calais and get all my wine, beer and spirits there as it's so much cheaper and quieter there than the mainstream places
"Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."
  • Buy Sangria 4.95 A Bottle Very Nice Indeed Exactly The Same As In Spain, Only Avaliable In Some Stores. Also Kp Nuts By The Check Out 79 P Big Bag. These Are From Lidl
  • Right, last year when we really and truly ran out of cash, we had to make some hard choices. My brother, who was in a similar situation had tried both Aldi and Lidl, and recommended Lidl (he was right).

I don't buy ready meals etc, but best buys for me are:
Plain and self raising flour 27p per bag
    Bread flour 49p
    Bockwurst sausages
    Frozen bratwurtz sausages (absolutely gorgeous)
    Tinned tomatoes
Sliced tinned mushrooms 33p per can - mega bargain
All cleaning products - especially the washing powder
Salami is currently cheaper than the ham and is really nice
They also stock spekulars, which is a Dutch spiced biscuit 69p for 600g, eaten for St Nicholas Day (6 December)

    Definitely don't buy
    Teabags unless they are typhoo

By the way, I try and go once a month (just after pay day), I can buy the whole of the month's grocery for approx £50 for the two of us. I was probably spending £50 a week at Waitrose, therefore Lidl saves me £150 a month!!! FANTASTIC

Do buy the winter ski clothing. (but please wait untill I've bought mine !o)
Excellent value (Its even cheaper to buy it from Aldi than it is to rent it)
The childrens ski suits we bought (and used this February) for £9.99 each I sold on ebay after we returned for between £15 and £25 each.
The Adults sets were £39.99 For a Jacket and sallopettes that were just as good as sets 5 times the price elsewhere. Very Smart and Very warm.
The thermals, gloves, socks, hats, roll necks and walking boots Etc etc were all excellent.
Just remember to hold your nerve because all of these items are sold for a week in early January just in time for your half term skiing holiday, you will kick yourself if you buy any of these items elsewhere.
