  • I am blessed with both a Lidl *and* an Aldi on my street, but have only just started exploring Aldi. I am a committed Lidl shopper already, and receive the weekly email with the non-food specials. There are some weird things like leopard-print sleeping bags, lycra unitards and horse blankets, but some gems too.

    Do buy:

    ground coffee
    chocolate
    rye bread
fruit and veg (if you plan to eat it within 24 hours)
gouda slices and other cheese esp Parmesan
pasta (is a good Italian brand)
    tomato juice in bottles
    condoms
    apple juice
Apple schnapps (if you can find it, please tell me)
    Rachmaninoff voka
    grilled peppers in jar
    German Christmas goodies like lebkuchen

  • never went into our local Lidl store as we had Tesco Morrisons & Waitrose until on camping holiday in Cornwall & our nearest s/m in walking distance was a Lidl - my 3 main purchases that I won't get anywhere else;

full grain porridge oats (great if you follow a G I diet) - also tried their other breakfast cereals with no probs

alcohol free mouthwash - the green NOT the blue, that one's foul!

    dark chocolate 70-75%

also have had good value wine, cheese , olive oil, ice cream & fruit juice - my boys also like the chocolate covered raisins
  • Aldi - Buy
Any of their electronic equipment especially MEDION and GERICOM they have proved (so far) to be excellent value, quality goods and with most with a 3 year warranty
A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

A young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent,

    Hi, I posted #43.
I am deeply ashamed and embarassed, I said cognac and smoked salmon and much to my chagrin forgot to mention cashew nuts.

Sorry. I hope you will forgive me.

    CASHEW NUTS.

  • LIDL Buy sangria, 2 litre iced tea, walnut icecream, vine tomatoes, herby sausages, longlife milk, rooibos tea, cappuchino choc biscuits, most choc excellent!, tawny port; clothes and house wares excellent value if you like the colour/style. I bought pair of telescopic walking poles for £6! Normally £20 each!

Don't buy yeast extract(marmite substitute) horrid!
  • DON'T buy Medion (from Aldi). Very good price, but if it fails, and it sometimes does, their customer service is lousy. The tech support people I spoke to had never seen or used, and did not even have copies of the manuals for, the products they were suposed to support. Did not return calls and were generally useless.

DO buy the Targa PCs and Laptops (from Lidl) - excellent spec for the price, and, touching wood, they go on forever. Could not build a PC for the price they charge.

Don't be affraid to take anything back that does not work - Aldi and Lidl seem happy to give refunds, no questions asked (although sometimes they will send a cheque to you after checking that the product is really faulty).

Aldi get a lot more stock of their specials than Lidl - who for some items (like PCs) only give each store a few units. Aldi can often order items in that they have run out of, where-as with Lidl, once it has gone, it has gone, which means that if you want one of their specials, you have to be willing/able to queue at the door at 8.30 a.m. on a Thursday morning.
