It is brilliant to see so much enthusiasm for Lidl’s. Here in Bedminster, an area of Bristol that is famous (allegedly) for a Vicky Pollard on every street corner, Lidl’s is still looked upon with suspicion by the middle classes, which is great as the freezers were packed with Fortnum and Mason Style decadence for ages. The Atlantic salmon was terrific and if you mince the venison it goes a long way and made delicious burgers and all sorts.

The only bummer I’ve had at Lidl’s was their Margaux wine at £9.99 which I bought for Christmas and a week later it went half price and was so annoyed I gave into temptation and drank it and it wasn’t worth a fiver. But hey.

I agree Farmstores is ace, but with it’s eye burning florescent lighting and families doing their weekly shop of frozen pizza, biscuits and chips for £20 you have to be brave but once inside there are real bargains. My favourites are continental frozen bread rolls 99p, 2 bags of frozen strawberries 99p (great for smoothies), lots of cheap Quorn and vege sausages and vege bacon and lots of cheap Baxter’s soups. Honestly, I am no snob but the Farmstores here should have a fly on the wall camera as it is so weird and wonderful and one flew over the cuckoo’s nest. Better than X factor.

I agree weird place but great stuff. My best buy 10 tins Heinz Parsnip soup for £1 (2 for £1 on special at Tesco!!) Everyone like it too. Also good for small bottles of panda pops/cans of drink for kids parties

Baby wipes are great from Lidl, I always buy these! They are 99p and excellent quality!

A tip from Martin's book I had for Christmas reuse baby wipes (when used for finger wiping and other cleanish jobs) to clean sinks etc. This works a treatand is also good for taps etc.

An IDEA - do you think we could create a XLS file with a list of what good to buy from these three stores. I have already written a very rough xls list though excluding all non-veg items, and most of it is cut and paste and set in different item catorgories. Not sure if we can add xls attachments on Martins site though?

Very good idea i'm just writing my own list taking ages!!
  • Try the mini stollen at Lidl's - they are truely gorgeous and very cheap. In fact all the German stuff is really good like the meat salad, potato salad and the little Nurenberger sausages (mini bratwurst). I also bought jars of antipasti for only 99p and an enormous jar of cornichons for 79p. Check out their toys - I bought a set of horses and a stable playset for a horse loving child this Christmas and it was extremely good quality. They had other sets (castles, cowboys etc as well). Just before Christmas I bought a small crate of clementines for about £1.50 and the few that are left have not gone soggy. I am very impressed with the things I have bought and they were extremely good value
  • Lidl blackcurrant high juice is perfect for Ribena fans. Also I loved the prawn crackers - I make my own chinese food as a cheap alternative to take-out so it was nice to get prawn crackers to go with.

Or buy a St. Luke’s Hospice Coin on a Keychain!

I can certainly recommend the Electronic stuff. I bought their 32" LCD TV a while ago and the picture is brilliant.
I have used a PC I bought from them with a wireless router which have not let me down since I bought them. Plus other gadgets and tools as well.
The only disappointment recently was when I purchased an electric chain saw which I didn't open for a couple of weeks, then when I came to use it, I found someone had nicked a part out of it, which made it useless.
So I returned it and because there was no more stock, they just gave me my money back, no quibble.
Foodwise, I like any of their Asian offerings, such as Nasi Goreng etc, or their Cooked chicken Tikka breast pieces. Great with a stir fry!
