Ring trading standards at the council and see if Manchester have a "trade safe" scheme where they list companies who've passed certain criteria.
In theory it should mean you're less likely to get ripped off.

    No instruction book left?
Did you ask if it was in working order? Did you ask if they had had it serviced regularly?

Fingers crossed it costs next to nowt to get fixed but its AUGUST get that heating switched off.

How cold is it in Manchester? If you wanted to pull a stroke, you could take out British Gas's Homecare cover, wait a few weeks then call them out.

Open all the windows whilst you're in. Lock them when you go out. If its not been used for months then it might be quick and easy to sort out.

But it is lovely out in Manchester. Just been out across Moston Brook and apart from it being a bit damp on the ground it's great weather. More September than August mind you.

I had this when I lived in Warrington. It was very good. We paid about £12 - 15 a month. For that you got an annual boiler service and replacement of any failed central heating parts. In 17 years we had four radiators and a hot water tank. Response time was very good and the plumbers competent. We now have one with Southern Electric.

All these schemes depend on an initial inspection to ensure the system is working properly. Any faults found at the initial inspection are not covered. They may also find things that you didn't know were wrong which may or may not be a good thing.
