Will this banana skin trick work with outdoor grown tomatos ? We've got some in hanging baskets and some of the upright ones............they are ripening but would be nice to have a few more.........Mary

I don't think banana skins will work with outdoor tomatoes. They have to be in fairly close proximity to other fruits. Cover your fruit in hanging baskets overnight with newspaper or fleece to protect them from rapidly dropping temperatures or pick them, store them on newspaper covered trays in a sunny window sill. Or if you're around all day, move your hanging baskets around in the garden so that they collect a few extra hours on sunlight as it moves around the garden.0

Thanks. At the minute we are at least getting little groups of ripe ones but I have visions of autumn arriving, temperatures dropping and being left with a lot of green tomatos (mind you, someone mentioned that green tomatos are very tasty when fried)Mary

Hi
Would you use tomatoes that are split ?
I have picked one of my big ones (dont know name/type) and it has a split in it.
Plus
The other ones (still green) have a line going round them as though they are going to split.
Help, does any one know why this is happening.
Just my big ones not my cherry ones

Yes you can use tomatoes that are split. As long as you don't get dirt in the split, then I find them very difficult to clean properly, So I would cut the dirt out.
Its normally uneven watering that causes splitting.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
My outdoor tomatoes are ripening up a treat now.Up until two days ago they had been green for weeks and I had given up on them.Taste realy good though.0

Quite a lot of my cherry Gardeners Delight tomatoes seem to be suddenly splitting, despite copious watering. But I check every day for those are ready for picking, and use any split ones immediately. Can I suggest that if anybody has been spraying their tomatoes to protect against blight, they wash all the tomatoes before eating to help remove any spray residue. It won't kill you if you don't, but probably better not to ingest the fungicide!0

They are probably splitting because of copious watering
you will always get a few splitting anyway. The big industrial greenhouses probably won't, because all there watering will be completely controlled. Even if they did, the fruit would never get to a shop.
I water my greenhouse tomatoes once every two days, over night with a leaky hose, on the day before they are to be watered I will pick the fruit, I think they taste better when they have been a day without being watered.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
