Complex one - taking ownership of an abandoned car

Remember the owners may have done a bunk, but they will still be in touch with friends/family here, you could be getting in to something that you may well regret.
I would just let it go, it ain't worth the possible hassle.0 -
If the vehicle has been issued with a 'seven day removal notice' by the council (in certain circumstances they can issue them on private property) then it could be worth contacting the council to see where if anywhere it is going to be disposed of. Usually a scrappy has a contract to collect 'end of life vehicles' for the council so it could be worth approaching whoever has the councils contract and make them an offer for it.
As said above though, it could be worth getting it HPI'd as if there is outstanding finance, the legal owners could take the car back anyime.

They'll happily collect it for free on behalf of the council. My bet is they wouldn't take any offers on a newish car as they'll want em themselves or know who to sell them to for a few thousand rather than a few hundred.
I suppose you could get a trolley jack onto the rear axle and park it outside your house and remove the tow sign but then you have the difficulty of registering it which it seems other posters know more about.Pew_Pew_Pew_Lasers! wrote: »Unless a complaint is registered, there is no offence.0 -
There is no difficulty registering it. You go to the Post Office, get the appropriate form, ticking the box which states the V5 wasn't supplied by the previous keeper and send it off to DVLA.0

It might be possible with the car's vin, registration docs, and a trip to a dealers to get keys made up? Also wonder how other neighbours will react as if they're looking closely will be pretty obvious how you got the car.0

Interesting stuff, but as Inactive said just be careful what you are getting into. I think on online RAC check covers outstanding finance, and only costs a 5r.
Now I'm of to register nextdoors beemer in my name;), or maybe I should find a Lexus?I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
