But you have to book a suitable MFU fare in the first place!
If I remember correctly all WTP fares are MFU'able to CW - even the bargin-basement sale fares which are an excellent time to book and upgrade to Club.
Not all WT fares can be upgraded but it's a total waste of miles to upgrade from WT to WTP. Similarly not all CW fares are MUF'able to F - however if you buy a suitable CW fare you typically get a one-way upgrade to F as part of the fare.
It's widely accepted that WTP to CW are the best use of miles on BA - opening up business class travel to the average punter.Legal team on standby0 -

Double check if the WT+ fare qualifies for MFU before converting those vouchers.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -

I got an extra day's holiday for free and £250 compensation. The next flight was overbooked too but I got to the airport too late to volunteer myself off. That day's compensation was £750 which would have paid for my whole flight. I know these things are rare but I have a lot of flexibility this year for once so am willing to try my luck
I've had my share of both-probably due to my frequent flyer staus last was a JFK LHR in September op-up from economy to business.
My favourite bump was also flying back from JFK to LHR. We were booked on the 9pm flight. A man pushed in front of me to get to the desk first and proceeded to insist as well as the $450 compensation he wanted to fly business both that day and on his flight back as he was "doing you a favour". I said quietly "We are three" they were looking for three seats. We got the bump-he didn't. As the tickets were only £300 return $450 was a nice sum -and used to pay for our next trip with a few miles added on.
In my experience most upgrades are due to over-booking and I agree some of these "stories" may be a little "over-egged".
I regard both upgrades and bumps as a bonus and not something to expect.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I once got upgraded (only from Madrid to London), but I turned up all hot and sweaty in jeans, jumper and anorak and simply asked if I was waiting in the right area.
The plane was not overbooked, and when I asked the guy why he'd upgraded me he just said "because I like you".0 -
