My first upgrade was due to my dog. I explained to the co-pilot that my dog would be loose when we landed and they needed to inform the cargo crew as I did not want him running down the concourse. I was placed in first class so I could be the first off the plane. Yes, the dog was loose when the cargo door was opened.

This probably happened on another 5 flights through the years, always with the same dog. I have even been put up in hotels overnight at their expense when they could not get the dog to the plane, happened twice. As well as having a new a new kennel shipped to me at their expense after he ate the one he was flying in. That overgrown large dog was a blessing in disguise in more ways than one.

I was surprised that when I would book a flight that the airlines did not get a red flag warning, "flights are full, or can only travel without dog'. when given my name.

Also, upgraded to first class with my husband from Korea to Guam, I just asked for a nice window seat. When we boarded, it was a very nice window seat, our friends were in the back.

Again on another trip when leaving Guam, we were upgraded in Hawaii - LA to first class without our knowledge. When the flight was full, we said we could take another flight, but was told we did not want to give up these tickets. That is when we were told it was first class.

On a flight to Guam from Denver, there were problems with the plane in Houston. I was suppose to be put on a flight to SF then Hawaii, then Guam, but the airlines did not tell me until the flight had left. I was put up overnight, given dinner, breakfast and a first class ticket to LA. There were still problems in the morning. My ticket was then upgraded to not only LA, but to Hawaii and the flight to Guam as well. The flight attendant in Hawaii tried to kick me back to coach as my ticket was not upgradeable, I did not move.
I was traveling on a free ticket used from my airmiles. YEAH.:T

My husband was upgraded on BA a few years ago. But since then everyone has been very snooty when asked about upgrading. Doesn't make a difference if traveling single or couple or dress.

But I have probably had around 15 upgrades to first class through the years.

Why do these threads always get loads of 'first-and-only' posters?

To ensure sufficient anecdotal evidence is available?....

    great(ish) minds think alike !!!!!!!
i've just sat here reading some of these posts and the ones on the other threads (which are in a similar vein) and just shook my head.
you don't have to be a seasoned traveller to spot the mistakes all over the place.
i have a real issue where anonymous posters are regarded as 'sources' .......if someone had just asked me!!. i could have answered lot's of these questions because before becoming an astronaut i used to be a concorde pilot for BA.
it's been churning over in my mind in the last couple of weeks about the time i spend looking and posting on here .
now i've had a warning ...it's probably time to duck out .
i've enjoyed the banter and distant camaraderie between some of you other posters (you probably know who you are ).
adios as they say in france (according to an anonymous source on here)

I booked a holiday to China with Tesco clubcard deals on the phone recently, for September.
I got a really nice SA and told her we were off for our wedding anniversary. She said 'Oh in that case I'll give you a complimentary upgrade to 1st class'.
As we've yet to fly with them I don't know if we will get it or not?

I came home last Sunday (16th) on a BA flight. Once on the plane I asked if I could move to the Club Class seats and the attendant said 'OK, but do it discreetly or the payers will get the hump'.
I fly the route regularly and was told before to just ask, so I did, although I've never done it before.
The attendant that told me previously to ask said it didn't 'depend on anything, other than how we feel on the day'
    Dead easy......................

If the sales assistant was just a travel agent then they have no authority to upgrade you.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Only upgrades I've ever had has been due to frequent flyer status; BA Gold and BMI Gold. The majority of my trips are in Business or First so not many opportunities for upgrades but I've done quite well getting upgraded to business on my occasional forays with international economy. Notably on BA and United.

BMI took pity on me a few years ago when I was travelling with my father shorthaul on separate tickets. He was upgraded to business (only going from London to Brussels) but turned it down explaining he was travelling with me. At the time I had top tier status with a Star Alliance partner and based on that they were happy to upgrade both of us.
  • I've been upgraded once - I was a very frequent flyer (every week) so can't claim to know how to get upgrades!

The one occasion was a flight from Bangkok to Sydney via Singapore. Quantas were kind enough to upgrade me from cattle to first class for the leg from Bangkok to Singapore (short haul) but then put me back in cattle class for the long haul!

Gary Glitter was in first on Thai airways - I wonder if he paid?

Maybe that is a valid reason for upgrade - be so repulsive that they have to stick you away from everybody else.

Because they have already made things up to tell their friends when they got home from their trips, to make them jealous, it is easy to repeat them for us all to hear.

One of my favourite stories is an upgrade to First Class on a BA 747 from SFO to NYC, apparently it is a regular flight.

So dates of upgrade, airline and flight numbers would be appreciated.

Great! I knew I shouldn't have bothered posting on here.

Yes this WAS my first post, and if the barrage of snide remarks thrown at me for being a 'first-and-only' poster is something to go by... then this will most definately be the last time I post!

I thought this forum was to allow folks to Report successes/failures? But maybe I missed the sentence that said "Only those people with more than 10 posts are allowed to give their opinion/successes/failures"!!

I will humbly resign myself to reading the forum from now on less I upset all those with 100's of posts...
