I'll take over with the jokes while AB is away. Wouldn't want anyone to feel deprived.
Good points so far today: the sun is shining after several cloudy days, it's lovely and warm, and I've just had a fabulous haircut (that cost me a whopping 3 euros! Not very moneysaving, sorry about the extravagance hehehehe)
Bad point: came home to find the flatmate's hideous Seventies underpants hanging on the washing line. Am now traumatised for several lifetimes :eek:0 -

Your flatmates underpants show how well things were made in the seventies (unlass this is the first time he has washed them:eek:  )

Not at all. Shall get around to replying shortly
Decided not to go to my placement today. As per usual, the people I work with just expect me to know everything with no training. The only people I seem to get a smile out of are 'customers' and people who work in other departments. I always get stuck with the miserable departments
When I started the placement I was told I wouldn't have a medical until 26th September at the very earliest and that I could do the placement with no pressure as I wanted to just do the placement and see what happened.
Since then, my placement/advisors have pressured me to up my hours, asked me to miss counselling (or rather everytime I bring it up, totally ignore me or tell me not to worry), e-mailed me about jobs/training courses, passed my details on to job brokers to ring me and ask training companies to ring me constantly. No pressure then. By agreeing to this placement, it seems I have told them that everything is great and I can go straight back into full time work.
I woke up today and thought 'no'. I'll go to the medical next week and tell them the pressure was too much. I will not miss counselling tomorrow. My counsellor has been away for 3 weeks, and they want me to miss 2 more weeks, maybe more if they thought it a good idea to extend my placement. I'm not being paid and it's not a condition of my benefit that I do this. I chose too, to try and improve myself and get back to work. If i'm going to be miserable, I may as well find something paid to get some consolation.
I note today that Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic has said he wishes to leave England because it's miserable here and everyone works to hard and doesn't enjoy life to the full and therefore everyone is stressed and miserable.
People have lost sight of what is important and live above their means. I'd just like a nice part time job that I enjoyed for now.
Anyway, welcome newcomers and hope everyone has a good day today :T0 -

Not that I am a great fan of NLP but it can get used effectively in these situations because it seems like only conversation. Situations can be seen in more than one way (NLP calls these frames) and so they try to get you to change your frame of view. The obvious one is is a glass half full or half empty. What I dont like about counselling is that quite often it takes god knows how many sessions to do what can often be done in a one hour session. I am working on helping people with sessions over the phone.
At the end of the day the counsellor is there to help and please dont take this the wrong way but because of the nature of depression there are many people who see counsellors who dont deep down want to be cured until what the depression is protecting them from is sorted out. Sometimes that is easy to see and sometimes the client cant or wont open up so the counsellor ends up shooting in the dark.
Try and be as open as possible with the counsellor and you should get some benefit out of it.
Not sure what you mean by depression protecting people from things? It went ok i suppose just talked really and i had to fill in a long tick sheet. She is passing me on to another male counsellor not sure if this is what usualy happens or because i said i relate better to males. As to being open,i have never been anything else to everyone including myself.0 -

Depression is a defense mechanism of the brain albeit a misguided one. One of the unconcious minds roles is to protect us which usually it does well (eg the speed you shut your eyes if something is thrown at your face) however sometimes it would be seen to have the wrong end of the stick.
We all work on a pleasure / pain principle and so as far as your mind is concerned the depression is more pleasurable than that which it is making sure you dont do. A good example is smoking. I dont think many people dont know that it is harmful yet people do it. Why? The unconcious mind gets something out of it eg looking cool when we are young or perceived relief of stress at work or at home, confidence and so on. Whatever pleasure the person gets outweighs the pain of knowing it is bad for you.
Back to depresssion I would be looking at what would you be doing or expected to do if you were not depressed and finding out what you would be then doing that you dont like, that also is stopped by your depression. The next step is to then alleviate that problem which may be easy or may be bloody difficult and then things can get better.
I dont know if counsellor did this but I would be asking questions that carry a negative and a bit of confusion to blow out the boundaries of your minds argument in a rather soft way so I might ask someone "what wouldnt happen if you didnt self harm?" Confusion ensues for a second while the brain works out the question and then the answer and often gives away the clients fears and at the same time gives the client a new viewpoint to think about. You see in problem solving it is often better to know what is not happening and why, rather than what is happening because we can already see that. It is easy to see that someone is sad but not easy to see what is not happening to make them happy.
I hope this explains things in a non judgemental way that people can relate toWho I am is not important. What I do is.0 -
