Ok, If you have an O2 Mobile Phone you can call the following O2 Number which will then ask you to dial the number you wish to call

    07730 666890

Can only be used in the evenings after 7pm and all day Sat/Sun

Full Details can be found at this site :

Try this website. calls from Orange phones to Oz seem to be 15ppm.

Cheap calls providers such as 18866, 1899, 18185 have call rates of 2p or 3p per minute to Australia. The Bizon calling card, which I haven't tried yet, costs 1.3 p/min.

This would be their charge on top of the Orange cost to call their London access number. You need to set up an account; see the home phones board for more discussion of these.

I've just seen that Orange payg charge 15p/min on their latest payg tariff. I hope you are on a cheaper one. If not, I think there are cheaper options if you will consider using a different network. Maybe an O2 SIM; either use the cross-net minutes as suggested, or sign up for their international calls package and Australia costs 10p/min.

Cheaper still is a Mobile World SIM - Australia costs 6p/min. The SIM will run out in 60 days if not used though.

But the cheapest if you want to make longer calls off-peak is Vodafone, using their Stop-the-clock option. Calls of up to an hour are charged only for the first 3 minutes. Used with a 18185 account, a 20 minute call would cost 59 pence total; with Bizon 40p.

perhaps you are mixing up calling an Australian mobile from a UK landline, which costs 15p/minute, with what the OP actually wants to do

0844 calls are fairly likely to cost a different tariff to the ordinary rate; possibly the same rate as mobiles, and don't even think of dialling 0911 numbers.

Thanks everyone but I'm totally confused (not hard for me)! What I want to do is make calls from my orang PAYG mobile to my mum's landline in Australia without her incurring any roaming charges. I'm not very sharp on technology so please would someone with patience spell out for me my cheapest option.

    Grateful thanks.

Your mum will not incur any roaming charges as you are using a UK Based mobile phone to call an international landline number therefore you will be paying international rates to call your mum and she will not be paying anything to receive the call...

The best thing for you to do to save money is get hold of a O2 PAYG Sim card and use the number I listed above after 7pm weekdays and all weekend and you will not be paying international rates, it will be as if your calling another O2 number in the UK

    Thanks matrix,

I would do that but I need to be able to phone during UK daytime due to the time difference (while I'm in work for instance 9-5). She's 8 hours ahead of us. How do I get a different sim card without buying a new phone? Can the sim be bought separately?

thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Yes, the O2 Sim Card can be bought seperately.

You can get one from the O2 Website for 99p

The following number can also be used but i'm unsure as to wheter it will work during the day but its worth a try 0844 484 0700 The number can be called from your Orange mobile but you should check with the Orange Operator on 100 as to the call charges per min for dialling the 0844 number.

Once dialled you will then be prompted to enter the number you wish to call, ie your mums number
