I had a really annoying experience in my local tesco today. I took in four pounds worth of coupons, none internet and all in date. I took the same amount in last week and had no problem. The cashier said I could not use them as Tescos policy is you buy the product or you cant use them. I was not a happy bunny and asked for someone to check this out. Two customer service people came over. Yes two! They both said that it had never been tescos policy to accept vouchers where people had not bought the products. I was pretty angry and nearly left all my shopping, but as a good will gesture they accepted them. I got home tonight and rung up and quoted to them the email I had from customer services saying that they do accept coupons and you don't need to buy them. The manager I spoke to agreed and apologised for my treatment (I was made to feel like an idiot)!! He also said that there policy is to accept these coupons and he will be making sure that the people in the store know the policy in future. He also asked if I would put everything in writing.

I just wondered if anyone else has had a problem like this.

yes, yes and yes! this is a recurrent problem unfortunately - the stores are not briefed properly and most SA's are operating their own "personal policies"!! I often wonder whether the stress and humiliation of trying to use the Tescos coupon policy is worth it!!! But getting head office to brief their stores and staff is a start...... polite persistence is my best advice?

I had problems with a couple of batches.....I always print a barcode on the back now.
    Never have an issue now.
Google "barcode generator" type in the barcode, copy 6 on a document or spreadsheet, and print on back of 6 x Mitchums multiple sheet before you cut it up, or PM me and I'll email my copy.

I never use a self scan till....it's much quicker with a SA, as long as they are properly trained!! You can also not be accused of abusing the system, as the staff member has to agree with what you are doing at the point of sale.
It's nice to be nice .....
You HAVE checked google before asking, haven't you?;)

Thanks for your reply Lisa. What made me so angry was we had spent nearly £90 quid in the store on Christmas extras, beer wine etc, and to quibble over a measly £4 worth of vouchers was disgraceful. I got taken over to customer service desk and was made to feel like an idiot. All everyone on there said same thing, we have never accepted coupons and we have worked here for years! Where do these people come from who work there for years and do not know the policy!! It always seems to be the middle aged women who make a fuss as if they enjoy playing god!! I try to go to younger members of staff who always take them! I am pretty certain the store will give me some kind of compensation in reply to my letter as I told them I was thinking about never setting foot in there store again plus posting this on a website warning others! He was so apologetic, so we will see what happens, but I am not letting this drop thats for sure!! lol
Never argue with a fool, they will lower you to their level and then beat you with experience.........!!!:rotfl::T

red arrow, read my post just above yours, proximity of the rival is not an issue. Go and get that tenner back or send a copy of your receipt and the voucher itself, off to Dundee Customer Services for reimbursement (naming and shaming your store)! :T
Same advice to babyj3 re the top post on this page.

Anyone else about to post in a similar vein, please stop letting some CS staff member who doesn't know the Tesco policy tell you something that's not true. None of this 'oh never mind thanks then' at the CS desk, instead say you are certain it's a national policy and you have it in writing. Still get told no or they phone 'someone' who says no? Then ask them to refer it up the line but stay polite and calm, you WILL get the right answer from someone even if it has to be Dundee rather than your store.

But do give your store a chance, take a copy of the policy posted by hales earlier on this thread, and go back in for the long (but worthwhile) discussion I mentioned in my post 1168.
Thank you for your advice and it is very much appreciated but it is easier said than done to stand up to a T employee who is most definite about the T policy when other members of staff all gather round and they back each other up - I for one am not the type who likes cnfrontation and there really should be no need for it, I only want to do my shopping after all and if I can get a bit of money off then I will but I do not want to get into any distressing situation - I have heart problems and must avoid stress of any kind . I have only been in that situation once and found it most distressing so much so that I shopped at Asda for weeks afterwards
I have read in one post that even Dundee told one of us that T will NOT accept Waitrose money off if there is not a Waitrose locally so it appears that it is the luck of the draw even when you phone Dundee.
I am annoyed that they would not accept my Waitorse coupon as I spend over £70 but as they had refuse it I threw it away as I thought it was of no use
Do you think Coupon Mad that it would do me any good to complain to Dundee - I do not get so distressed over the phone so feel able to take it up with them and hopefully if I get the right person it might just filter through to the store in question or would I be flogging a dead horse
    Thanks again for your advice
    I am not a beige person:D
  • Hi can someone tell me are ALL tesco stores supposed to take the moc's or is it at their discretion only i have been refused twice in 2 stores this week ?

Yes, I would phone Dundee in your case. You still have your receipt after all to show you spent £70 and didn't use a coupon. Shame you threw the coupon away otherwise you could have sent it to them with a copy of your receipt, asking for reimbursement as your store got it wrong.

But in a phone call to Dundee (0800 505555) hopefully the CS person will hear your distress at the way you were treated, and also hopefully will actually know about the national acceptance of 'conditional spend' coupons. If the person you speak to says you couldn't have used it anyway or that it's only Sainsburys ones, they are wrong as you know, so ask them to check as you are certain. Just be persistent but polite, and make it clear you only threw the voucher away because you felt so upset.

Dundee sometimes compensate bad treatment with a gift card, so in your case I would expect at least a tenner giftcard but maybe a bit more, otherwise you are not actually being compensated for your distress (only reimbursed the tenner you should have saved).

Believe me, I do know what you mean about being made to feel really bad by the confrontational attitude of some Tesco staff. I too have been hauled off to the CS desk and made to feel like a criminal in the past, more than once. I wrote to the local Store Manager in the end and now the same store is - usually - fine with mocs as he agreed with me. :D

My best advice to anyone is always to politely ask for a Supervisor at the till, if a cashier says something wrong about the coupon policy. Even if it holds up the queue, it's better to 'educate' that cashier there and then if the Supervisor actually comes over with the right answer (yes!). Better than paying anyway then fuming, then phoning Dundee or taking it up later at the CS desk (where they often have no clue about till policy!).

But in your case you did try to deal with it instore and still got the wrong answer by the other staff and were treated badly. That's worth a phone call I reckon, it's just inexcusable especially in the current credit crunch (do they not want to keep their customers?).
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
