    Hi

    I'm new here!

Found a good site to get the hacks for DVD players: http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/hackable.asp

Only problem I have is that I own a Sony machine, and there don't appear to be any hacks available,

unless of course anyone knows otherwise.....

Go to VCDHelp.com click the link on the left for DVD Players and use the search function. This should list you player, reviews and MRegion mods / hacks.

Some remote hack for sony here:

    Hi Seth,

I was wondering how it is possible to disable macrovision?

    Cheers, Wilf.

There are 4 basic routes I'd only recommend the first 3 in order of my preference.

    1) RIP the DVD and copy it with DVD Decrpytor to produce a macrovsion free backup copy. Keep the orginal safe and play the copy, this is legal for peronsal use and is allowed in the UK under existing fair use rights for copyright. You will not need to disable Macrovision as the copied DVD has Macrovsions disabled!

    2) Disable the Macrovsion via a secret menu or remote code. Some units will flip MV back on and the start of a new chapter depends on DVD and player. Good player keep MV off for good!

    3) Some player need a hardware mod see below

    4) Buy some hardware to do this. This is the worst option IMHO due to cost and signal degradation.

Hope this helps also PC advice below

    Seth.

Macrovision is usually done like the Multi region hacks. e.g via a circuit board mod or secret menu or remote code.

Look at VCDHelp.com click on the DVD Player link on the left, search for your player and see what is available.

If you have a Windows PC and an ATI card download the Rage Underground drivers and you can toggle the MV on and off when playing back a DVD.

A search for how to disable macro vision is worthwhile. Also macrovision needs to be turned off for high end video projection and plasma LCD sets, so contact the retailer / manufacture and say "your DVD player does not work on my Philips projection system I need to turn off the macrovsion according to Philips how do I do this"

    Your milage may vary...

Oh this might help on PC DVD Players

    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=205

    good intro

You can also disable the macro vision in hardware this is an example, not for the timid :) will void your warantee. And if you do nothing else UNPLUG THE DVD from your TV/VCR and the MAIN BEFORE YOU START.

Hardware mods are model specific, you HAVE to know what you are doing the mods for some of the Sony's require a new Chip best get this done at a specialist dealer. PM me if you want a recommendation for a good dealer(!)
    Seth.

There is no problem by-passing the region code settings on a DVD Player.

Retailer in the UK (e.g. Sainburys, Asda, Richer sounds, etc) sell units that are not locked to a specfic region. Some unlocked units cost more than locked units, this is just a marketing ploy in most cases. It is a ligitmate practice where the retailer need to modify the players hardware, however most players are unlocked by a code on the remote, so paying £10 extra to unlock a locked player seems a bit of a con IMHO.

There are many legitimate reasons to unlock a DVD player to make it multi region. You can do this for example to play a disc from another region not available in the UK (region 2)

To find how to to this for you player,

    1) got to www.vcdhelp.com, this is one of the best video sites on the web along with Doom9 IMHO,
    2) click on the DVD Players section on the left
    3) use the search screen to find you player the link is here
    4) read the reviews for you player, there is a section for remote unloking etc..

The reasons for region coding where designed by the movie companies over 10 years ago so they could control the release of titles accross the regions. But with other pressures the release schedules are much tigher now :).

If you want to purchase LEGAL DVDs region one DVD, using a scheme approved by HM customers and excise, and shipped entirely buy the Royal Mail from a bonded warehouse, so they are VAT exempt under personal import rules try http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/. Their prices include shipping worldwide :) I order and get discs within 3 days in the UK. They also ships large orders in bits so you will not have to pay VAT on items less than the threshold value for the law (I think this is around £17.99)

This is not illegal companies like 7day shop and mymemory do this for camera and computer kits, these 2 operations are based in the CI.

    Hope this helps.

    Seth, I love you! :D :T
Thanks to you I have been able to get and play a region one DVD that I have wanted for such a long time. Thank you so much! :j :D

Amazon have the following player with scart lead for £19.99 incl free delivery.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000CCZGPU/ref=ed_best_h_15/026-2687377-4544402

Inventive Multi-region 5.1 DVD-330 DVD Player with Scart Lead - Silver

Maybe best to wait until buyers put reviews of the unit up on Amazon's site.

p.s. kind of puts the price of scart leads on the high street into perspective £5-£10.
  • Colleague went to Sainburys at the w/e to buy a new DVD player. Picked up an Alba DVD73 M/R marked up as £29.99. When he went to the till, hey presto, came up as £19.99
