I've found some bargains in cheap book shops too, like The Works.
There's a good little shop opposite leeds market too that's worth a look in for those who live nearby. I forget the name of it.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -

I have saved lots of bit and pieces from my recent trip to America and this is a project that I want to do when the winter sets in. My Dd's have treated me to a lovely 'scrapbook' and I will buy odds and ends as I need them. I do go to a crafting class that some ladies and I set up when our council-un one closed down .We found a church Hall that we rent for two hours a fornight .Costs about £6.00 between 8 of us and we all bring our bits and pieces to it. There is one lady who is very good and she helps show us different techniques. We have made some lovely cards over the last few months and I never buy shop-bought Birthday cards anymore .I can make better ones at a fraction of the price .When I was in the U.S. I went to some big stores in the Malls there and their stuff was a fraction of the price of Hobbycrafts stores .Rubber -stamping is very popular there and I brought stacks of stamps and pads back with me .If anyone is visiting the U.S. then try 'Michaels' for crafting bits or 'The Dollar Tree' where there are lots of peel-offs for around 30p a sheet. Embellishements can be found almost anywhere.Once you start as other OP's have said it is very addictive .I now have four large 50 litres plastic boxes full of things. Tell your family that you are interested, and on birthdays and Christmas give them ideas of what you may like .
Decoupage is anther craft that I really enjoy. B&Q usually have scraps of childrens wallpaper that you can have for free, and mounted on card (usually empty cereal boxes )make excellant embellishments for childrens birthday cards. It's a terrific way to re-cycle stuff. Save all your Christmas and birthday cards and cut out embellishements from them. I bought a craft-card c.d from P.C. world for around a tenner and that is great to for printing out different things .Or find someone else who does it and share the cost .I share the cost of the more expensive things with my sis-in-law .When she is at home she sends her grandchildren decorated cards every week (They live in Dubai) the little girls love getting them as opposed to just letters .Val decorates the cards with all sorts of things .Even cut-out pictures of adverts of things from England for toys or foodstuffs even.It helps them when they get a bit homesick to see an advert for say Oxo's or soap powder. it's amazing what you can find to use .get an Argos catalogue and cut things out from that and mount on card and then mount again on card-stock.
www.alansandbarryscrafts.com or www.docrafts.co.uk or www.craftchannel.tv or just google crafts there are hundres of sites online to choose from .Most of them will tell you how to get started as well.0 -
I have to agree with Curry Queen, scrap booking doesn't have to be expensive. I've been doing it for years and I always start with the same 4 things:
A scrap book/album - usually bought from TK Maxx where you can get some lovely spiral bound ones full of black card with the protective tissue paper over each page
A gold pen & a silver pen - for writing in notes, messages doing little doodles etc.
A pack of picture corners - bought from the post office these mean I dont have to glue my photos.
After this I use photo's and anything else that springs to mind, After a trip to New York in 2002 I came back with allsorts of free odds and ends that others might call rubbish, free maps of the city, flyers for bars and clubs I went to, ticket stubbs and if I was missing anything, recyclingold magazines and holiday brouchers gave me all the colourfull glossy paper I could ever need.
Scrap booking can be one of the cheapest and most rewarding passtimes ever.01/08/09 - Honeymoon credit card - 0% £2500 - personal OD £350 - DFD May2010Done it once, will do it again - DFW 5340
