  • I have to wonder about the validity of these claims about only using acid free products. Some of my mum's old scrapbooks must be over 50 years old by now, containing many photos amongst other things, yet have survived without any damage using bog standard old-fashioned scrapbooks

At what point would a photo actually become damaged if using normal books rather than the "acid-free" variety?

Modernday scrapbooking mainly uses creative paper and cardstock as background with your photos and decorations then aded on these pages. (called Layouts)
We dont use a 'scarpbook' but rather an album, which is more like a big file of plastic sleeves where you can then input your finished layouts.

your family is very lucky that you still have all your keepsakes and pics. Many of my mother's are not in great condition any more and most of the photos have deteriorated badly (even though they aren't that old) ie brown edges, markings looking like slashes; discolouration; fading etc. :(

Have you ever kept any photos in those old-style magnetic photo-albums? the kind where u lift up the sticky flap and insert photos - those are the worst!! sadly most of my childhood photos were kept in those...

Of course I suppose if you are willing to take the chance with photos that are irreplaceble its up to you.
But im not taking that chance as I'm hoping my great grandchildren will one day have a look back in history!!
(ok, i admit i sometimes - very rarely- put tiny pieces of normal paper that I have printed on in my scrapbook!!) I just hate my own handwriting!!!
although as i am told that is what makes it unique!?!

i intend to do a book each for my three (now grown up) children so they can have family memories to take away with them. although it is possibly a project for my retirement.

My auntie did a scrap book for me for my 21st birthday. She bought an absolutely stunning scrapbook & filled each page starting with my great grandparents when they were young & how there were when I knew them & onto my grandparents & my parents & aunts & uncles. She included a page for the day I was born & then the pages that followed were me growing up with an extra special page for the year that my sister was born. There are pages left over for me to fill in as I get older. She also included old cards that my great grandparents had given me.

It made it even more special as she had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis halfway through doing the book & I know she really struggled to finish it.

It was an absolutely perfect present & I plan to add to it to pass down through my family.

    Hi,

I have just started scrapbooking and a lot of family photos inherited from my Mum are in those magnetic albums and solidly stuck. Do you have any hints on how to best get them out or is it impossible?

    Thanks in anticipation.

 oops sorry, cant be too helpful there.
Maybe someone else has the magic trick on how to get your pics outta there.
I've tried using a knife and trying to loosen them. then just slowly -very slowly- and carefully trying to peel them off. some came off ok, but they wont be all nice and flat. But then again if you are carefull, you can still save them and glue them all nice and flat again in a proper scrapbook where they wont be damaged any further.

Just to let you all know of a great scrapbooking forum site https://www.ukscrappers.co.uk We're a very friendly bunch - willing to give advice and inspiration :) They have a gallery to post your layouts or to get inspiration from others. They also have a section for beginners to ask questions on how to do techniques and other information. (It is a forum site not a sales site.)

    best wishes
