There are good and bad in most areas. Let's not get personal.

I love visiting London but I wouldn't want to live there. Perhaps people feel the same way about Yorkshire.

Actually I spend almost every weekend from friday to monday in London in the area called Stratford with a man who has lived in Stratford or surrounding areas for 40 years. I am merely repeating what he has said. Before you make a comparison why not spend some time living in a different place. Then you will see that in comparison London is a dirty, stinking hole and the only people that defend it are the ones who have never experienced living somewhere better and are sore about it.

    Oh dear, more assumptions!!!

I assume that according to the high crime rates in London during the 40 years that your friend has been living in Stratford he must have been the victim of many, many crimes!! And god only knows how much has happened to you in your weekend visits, how could you even contemplate going!!

For your information I have lived other places, Ive lived in Reading for a year, Newcastle for more than a year, Dublin and Valencia for a year. So I think I can make comparisons!!! Also I have businesses that are based in Essex, Herts and Berkshire so I travel to each at the weekend.

As I am an architect, I have many projects both inside and outside of London infact all over the country so I don't just sit in London my whole life!

Anyway, you are entitled to have your opinion, lets just leave it at that.

Well this thread has really enlightened me. Having read and considered all of the posts the conclusion is..........

    Some people love London
    Some think it is ok
    Some hate it.

Wow thanks for every one for helping me reach this truly stunning conclusion

If you truly mean this wlfc1, you must be missing some beautiful sites in our country.
If you had merely said it was your favourite capital city, I could understand that, but to say its the ONLY city in UK worth visiting appears quite sad.
I dont profess to be well travelled, but to not be able to appreciate our (southern) cities such as Bath, Oxford, Truro, etc makes me grateful that I must be viewing with a different outlook on life. I'm sure folk from the north feel the same about many of their cities, and I hope one day to visit many of them.

I may not be rich enough to travel to "quite a few capital cities", but its rich enough to see the beautiful architecture and history worth appreciating in many of our local cities.

On Thursday 3rd Nov, I went to London for the day with my daughter for some embassy work.
I was impressed with the capital city. I was only really in Zone 1 on the travel card, so can only speak for that part of the city.
It was clean and tidy. The buildings seem well decorated and clean, Public transport was excellent, and cheap. Masses of food and coffee shops. Friendly people, helpfull underground staff. I felt safe too.
The whole feeling and day was very positive. Nice one LONDONERS!

Perhaps the only negative would be the cab drivers, they seem in too much of a hurry and don't give way for pedestrians. I was almost hit by one who was driving in a dedicated left turn lane, but carried straight on and honked his horn to clear pedestrians out of the way who were unaware he was going to abuse the traffic regulation. But that was a minor blip on the day.

Cheers, I look forward to retunring next month with the family

Bus lanes in london often have left turn markings at junctions to enable cars to turn left legally across the lane, considerate Bus and Cab drivers going straight down the bus lane do sometimes hoot to warn pedestrians that they are not turning.
