If 'someone' happened to find themselves near a Currys what would they need to get from the supermarket afterwards?

    flour, yeast, sugar, salt.
I use Sainsbury's wholemeal and/or any strong white
If you plan to make a lot of bread I'd recommend this (it lasts longer and you don't end up using very little and throwing away a whole sachet):

    (Sainsbury's don't sell it)

'Someone' could have a look at the home baking dept, for

    brown or white strong flour,
dried yeast (not the one in the tub cos that's not suitable, should one just happen to acquire a bm, the sachets in a box will say if it's suitable),
ordinary salt (not LoSalt, as I found to my cost at first :o)
    sugar
and butter or oil (I prefer oil, think it gives a better texture and fool myself it's better for me. Use 1 tablespoon oil to replace 1 oz butter)

That's just the basics, of course if 'someone' did accidentally trip over the threshold of Currys and suddenly find the bm fairy had been at work, there will be a very good recipe book in the box...

Let us know how the bruises are ;)

even if you're not going to make a vast amount of bread, it's still worth getting, it keeps really well sealed with a clip or in a Lock & Lock in the fridge ... & it'll freeze too

I'm just getting to the end of a 500g pack of a similar product, I put a clip on it, then put the whole thing in a Lock & Lock container in the freezer & just decant a few Tablespoons at a time into a small Lock & Lock that I keep in the fridge

I must have had it for well over a year & the yeast is working just as well as it was when I opened the pack

    & no I don't work for Lock & Lock :D

To make a basic loaf? If so, the loaf I do mostly I use bread flour (a mix of wholemeal and white), fast acting yeast (I normally use the sachets), the rest you will have in store probably, sugar, salt, butter. Of course, you can add all sorts, sundried tomatoes, olives, cooking oil, different types of flour etc.

Many thanks, folks. Match up with the list I had made, but didn't want to find I had missed something silly - not saying I'm going to be tempted of course ;)
Interesting comment about the oil - that's what I expected, but noticed on Gadget Show that he used butter.
  • Hello, I've had a bread maker for ages, but not experimented with many recipes at all, anyway, my question -

For a basic loaf, do I *need* to use butter?

I'm trying to cut down on dairy, so I can use Pure marg, or oil instead?

Never used pure marg so I can't comment on that, but I always replace each ounce of butter with a tablespoon of olive oil as I think it gives the bread a better texture. hth
  • Thank you, I'll give that a try. :)

Currys have the SD256 for only £69.99 at the moment, dunno if prices are being reduced in line with the April launch of the new panasonic breadmakers with seperate yeast dispenser...wonder if the prices will drop further?

Go through Quidco for 3% cashback and a 10% off voucher at Currys (with FREE Delivery for on-line orders - does not apply to reserve and collect).

I just got mine yesterday and have already made two loaves - a bargain for £63 :D

No bruises - just a very big (and slightly guilty) grin:D

Of course I am blaming cooking-mama

Now got to work out how to re-arrange the stuff on the worktops.
