The sugar feeds the yeast and speeds up the fermentation process (according to my book). Why not try reducing the sugar slightly and see what happens. Apparently, modern yeast is able to feed on the starch in the flour and does not rely on sugar...trial and error I guess.

  • I am absolutely convinced to buy a Panny breadmaker after reading the helpful threads, but I notice that people have trouble with the paddle. John Lewis will extend their warranty to 5 years for £33. Do people find that the Panny has a long life? Or, for once, might the extended warranty be a good idea? Thank you!

I'm not sure about the warranty, I haven't had mine long enough to comment on that. I bought the one with the raisin/nut dispenser and have only used that facility once so, think carefully if it justifies the extra cost. Also, they are reduced at Amazon at the moment - worth a look there.

I have since made a granary loaf which was a delight, also tried the Hovis bread mix which was 29p in Asda and this was gorgeous,we all loved it !
Got some fresh yeast from the ASda bakery yesterday so off to try making a loaf with that .
I have been stopped smoking for 7 weeks and this breadmaking is really helping me ,giving me somthing else to think about .I love my Panny LOL
  • My local Costco (Bristol) has the SD-255 in at £82 including VAT, that's a good price anyway and coupled with Costco's no quibble guarantee I'm almost sorry I already own one!

  • In got a Panasonic bread maker a few days ago and im delighted with the bread ,so far
I have made some lovely basic white loaves and a sandwich loaf ,I have never baked in my life so am clueless ,I am finding them a bit sweet, would I be able to cut the sugar out or do we need it in for some other reason .
Have been reading all thebreadmaking threads andam getting excited about all the bread I will be able to make

We use a tablespoon and a bit of honey rather than sugar, it seems to work perfectly fine

I couldn't get any flour from Lidl so bought Sainsbury's--what a mistake! The bread was very heavy & tasted strange to boot. Tesco doesn't seem as bad tho..

  • Just to let you know that the price for the SD255 (new version) has dropped on Amazon to £87.99. It's now cheaper than the older version. Plus of course you can get Piggy Points. I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of mine - as a loaf of bread is about £1.30 on the island it should pay for itself rather quickly. HTH.

  • Any Idea what the running cost is to make a quick loaf of bread using a panasonic bread maker?
